World Teachers’ Day
On Wednesday this week, we celebrated World Teachers’ Day and I challenged the pupils to populate a noticeboard with messages of thanks to their teachers. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world and we joined over 150 countries in its acknowledgement. The United Nations placed ‘Achieve Universal Education’ as one of its Millennium Development Goals as they firmly believe education is the key to all of the other Development Goals being met. It was a wonderful sight at the end of the day with so many thoughtful words posted on the board.

Macmillan Coffee Morning
Thank you for sending in so many delicious baked goods last Friday to support the Macmillan Coffee Morning and also to those parents who helped out. The children enjoyed the delicious cakes enormously and we were thrilled to be able to support this worthy cause.

Windows into Learning
Today, we welcomed Year 4 parents to a presentation by Mrs Simmons. For more details see article further on in the newsletter.

Open Morning
Next weekend, Saturday 15th October, the Whole School opens its doors to parents looking for independent education for their children. The morning runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm and will provide an insight into life both academically within the classroom and in terms of the opportunities available in the wider School community. Teachers will be on hand to showcase their subjects and answer questions and many of our pupils will be helping out on the morning with Year 7 acting as tour guides and other year groups helping within departments. They are fantastic ambassadors and their help is very much appreciated. Thank you for your support in recommending friends and colleagues and we hope they are able to come along on the morning.

Achievements
Jack Mason (Y7) was selected for a County Archery Shoot (Northamptonshire v Leicestershire). Overall (adults and juniors, all bow types) Leicestershire won the match, but the combined Northamptonshire Juniors beat the Leicestershire Juniors with Jack the highest scorer in his category.
Jack Bates (Y5) won the Orange Ball Competition at the Northampton County Lawn Tennis Club Championship and is now the Clubs Orange Ball Champion.
Molly Barnes (Y8) was awarded the 'Endeavour Trophy' at the Corby Festival of Dance.

In the Classroom
This week I have been impressed by Year 7 pupils who demonstrated their thinking skills and questioning when discussing aspects of different religions in their RS lesson. They showed an understanding of other people’s points of view and were keen to find out more information. If you have noticed some extra kindness around School this week, it could well be the work of the Year 6 pupils. In their Life Skills lessons, they have been talking about random acts of kindness and how a small act can make a big difference to someone else’s day. Next week I will be reporting back with some examples of what they have done.

Habits of Mind Poster Competition
This week, pupils have been given details about the ‘Persisting’ poster competition and I would like to encourage as many of them as possible to enter. They can:

  • Work individually or with others
  • Produce a hand drawn or electronic poster but it should be suitable to be blown up to A3 size

Other information:

  • Deadline for entries is Friday 21st October (when we finish for half term)
  • The word ‘Persisting’ should be included somewhere on the poster
  • Entries should be submitted to Mrs Owen in hard copy or via gmail
  • If photos/pictures are included, they must be original, not sourced from the internet etc.

There will be a prize for the winner. Good luck, everyone!

Help for Children’s Mental Health
An interesting read in The Guardian this week on how helping parents understanding their child’s mental health is essential as the NHS children’s mental health services are struggling to cope with the demand placed upon them. To read the article click here

Positive Parent Programme
I am proud that here at Wellingborough we are being proactive with our approach in tackling mental health concerns and our Wellbeing team are at the forefront of that drive with their ever growing Positive Parenting Programme.  The next session on ‘Teaching positive behaviour - positive behaviour management and its impact’ is on Thursday 13th October and parents across all three schools are more than welcome. For more details click here.

National Childhood Measurement Programme
The National Child Measurement Programme took place in School this week and the NHS nurses came in to measure the height and weight of our pupils in Year 6, in order to assess overweight and obesity levels in children within primary schools. This data can be used at a national level to support local public health initiatives and inform the local planning and delivery of services for children. More information can be found on the NHS website, click here.

Worried about that? Drop in and chat!
Thank you to our Wellbeing Managers, Gemma Saunders and Steve Hill, for hosting a drop in for parents this week. This provides a great opportunity for our parent community to come and speak to our wellbeing team about their work and involvement with the pupils, as well as discussing any specific concerns around wellbeing.

Year 4 Trip to Verulamium
On Friday, 30th September, Year 4 had their first trip of the year, which was very exciting. They were full of enthusiasm and exceptionally well behaved. The visit included a hands-on discovery session in the museum, exploring the ruins of a Roman theatre and a walk to see the mosaic floor and hypocaust of a large villa. The staff at the museum complimented their confidence and high level of enquiry skills, as they investigated and studied the artefacts in the teaching room. Verulamium was the 3rd largest city of Roman Britain and there have been many treasures uncovered during excavations from the unique theatre with stage, the only one of its kind in Britain. The pupils have been writing an account of the visit in English lessons, using a snake tool for planning and their History lessons will unveil more detail about Roman life. To read Thomas Docker’s account of the day click here.

School Charity Nominations
Earlier this term, all of the Clubs were asked to put forward their suggestions to the Charity Reps for the charities they felt we should support this year. Four charities were chosen and these were presented most confidently to the pupils and staff by the Charity reps on Thursday. The four charities put forward were: Air Ambulance, Children Are Butterflies, Cystic Fibrosis and British Heart Foundation. Each of these charities has touched one or more of our pupils personally and they shared their stories with us. Each pupil and staff member was then asked to vote and we are pleased to announce that this year we shall be supporting British Heart Foundation.

As we kick start our fundraising efforts, we enjoyed our first Charity Break today and I would like to thank Bears, Jaguars and Lions for their sweet treats. The amount raised was £421 which is a great start to our fundraising efforts. Thank you for all your support.

WPSA
On Wednesday, the WPSA held their Annual General Meeting and elected their Chair and other Officers. I am delighted to report that Anne Brunet-Huntingford is elected as the Chair, and will continue to be ably supported by Judith Griffiths (Treasurer), Kim Bianchi (Secretary) and a small but highly efficient group of committee members. Our first event will be the Christmas Disco on the 15th December and tickets will be on sale after the half-term break. I would like to thank the committee for their continued commitment to raising funds for the school and organising social occasions for our Prep School Community.

Open Day
Tomorrow, all Prep School departments will be on display at the Open Morning, where prospective parents are invited to tour the School and ask questions. A good number of departments have pupils involved and I would like to thank you in advance if your child is helping us on the day. Thank you also to those who have suggested to friends or relatives that they should visit the School. We are very proud of our School and are excited to share the great things we do.

Form Teacher Parents’ Evening
We look forward to seeing parents who have booked 10 minute appointments with their child’s form tutor on Tuesday 18th October.  It will be a valuable opportunity for you to discuss how your child has settled into a new form group and a new school term.  These meetings will take place in the Prep School form rooms (with the exception of Mr Whitby who will be located in Robinson Centre Room 15).  The start time is 3.30pm for Year 4 and 4.30pm for all other year groups.  During the course of the evening, members of the Senior Leadership Team will be in the Library where refreshments and maps will also be available.

Effort Grade Reports
All parents will receive an effort grade mid-term report detailing your child’s effort in the relevant subjects.  This will be sent out to parents at the beginning of the half term holiday.  Any queries should be addressed to the subject teacher, in the first instance.

Year 7 Dragons’ Den
Today, members of my Life Skills class stepped into the Dragons’ Den to pitch their ideas for innovative ideas and developments which would enhance our creative teaching room in the Robinson Centre.  All the presenters hid their nerves very well and spoke with confidence.  They also answered tricky questions posed by our ‘Dragons’ – Miss Everett (Headmistress of Pre Prep), Mrs Matthews (Senior School Head of Careers) and Mr Baddeley (Senior School Housemaster).  Well done to all those pupils involved for their hard work and excellent presentation skills.

Medication
A gentle reminder that pupils should not be carrying any medication on them unless it is for emergency use e.g. Epipen. For more information on medication, please refer to our First Aid Policy which can be found on the School website.

Mental Health Awareness Day
Monday, 10th October, was Mental Health Awareness Day and in a number of Club meetings on Tuesday morning pupils discussed how they could look after their mental health. Click here to view a really useful document and this might act as a catalyst in talking about this topic at home with your children.

Year 5 Black Country Museum Trip
On the 11th October, Year 5 went on a trip to the Black Country Museum. We had to be at school by 8:15am because the bus was going at 8:30am. We got there, and split into our groups and off we went into the museum. My group was looking at a boy called Samuel Webb. First we went to a local shop. The man told us lots about what the shop sold and things like that. Next we went to a sweet shop. I bought a pineapple sweet. I thought it was really soft so I bit into it really hard. To be fair, I thought I had broken my tooth! After that we went to the bakery. Next, we went into an old Cinema. There were posh people’s seats and benches for the not so rich people. After lunch, we walked down to Lillian’s house. It was really fun looking at a Victorian house. Next, we were going to the mine but first we went to Rose and Jack’s house; they were one of the wealthier people. Soon after that we went to the mine. My group watched a short clip then we went in. We had to put helmets on and then we went into the mine. It was pitch dark but there was a little light from the torches. Then the man told us that we all had to turn off our torches. Now it was pitch, pitch dark. I couldn’t see anything. It was horrible; all we could see was a tiny bit of light shining on the statues. Finally we got out. It felt good to see daylight. After we had done that we headed off to Samuel Webb’s house. It looked very different to our houses now. Then we went to a chapel and we learnt a lot about what happened in the chapel. After a while it was time to go home. We all got on the bus and off we went back to school. I really enjoyed going to the Black Country Museum.

National School Rugby Qualifiers – Midlands Region – Sunday 20th November 2016
This year’s National Schools Rugby Tournament for the Midlands Qualifiers will be hosted by us here at Wellingborough Prep School on Sunday 20th November 2016. This is a great opportunity for Wellingborough Prep School and we are very much looking forward to the event. We will be entering teams in to the U13, U11, U10, U9 & U8s age groups. We are currently in the process of organising the full event and to make it a big success we are looking to see if there are any Dads out there who are RFU qualified referees who would kindly volunteer to help out on the day of the event. We are ideally looking for 6/7 referees across all the age groups so if there is anyone interested please can you email Mr Irvine on lji@wellingboroughschool.org as soon as possible to discuss further. All your help and support on the day will be very much appreciated.

After School Clubs/Activities, Tuesday 18th October - UPDATE
On Tuesday 18th October, apart from Dance, all other after school clubs and activities will be cancelled due to the parents’ evening taking place in the prep school. Apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Parents and Changing Rooms
Please can we remind all parents that under no circumstances should they be entering the changing rooms at any time. If you are dropping off pupil’s bags then please can they be taken to the Prep Office and left there. Thanks for your understanding on this matter.

U13 Rugby Selection for Wellington College Rugby Tournament
I would like to take the opportunity to outline how the selection process will work for the U13 Wellington College Rugby Tournament taking place in November. We are limited by the number of players we can take in a squad and with competition for places high thought it would be good to highlight some of the key points our selection will be based on. We will be required to name our squad by Monday 14th November 2016.

Selection process:
Alongside each player’s performance this term we will also be considering the amount of game time played; the number of injuries/illnesses and matches missed, the number of after school practices attended and players with attitudes both on and off the pitch. Another requirement to be selected is committing to every Monday night practice between now and the tournament taking place. Only players who can commit to the Monday practices will be eligible for selection as we need the time with the boys to prepare as best we can.

There will be a cost for the players selected in the squad and this will cover accommodation, travel, breakfast, lunch and squad dinner the evening before (we will depart on Tuesday 22nd November at 16:30). The approx. cost will be around £75.00. A clarion and full information pack will be emailed to all the parents of the players selected at the same time submit our squad list.

Trips
With Year 6 in France and Year 7 in the Peak District, the School feels a little empty with over 120 pupils away. If you follow us on Twitter @WboroPrepSchool you will see what the two groups have been discovering. Year 7 return today and Year 6 over the weekend. Reports will be in the newsletter after half term.

Open Morning
We were delighted with the number of visitors that attended last Saturday's Open Morning. Our Year 7 pupils acted as guides and they can be proud of their input, proving to be a great asset to the School and the making of such a successful event. Thank you to all the staff and pupils who attended and promoted their subjects so keenly.

Finally…
As we come to the end of a very busy half term I wish you all the very best for a relaxing and refreshing break. There have been many exciting and engaging learning activities that have taken place in the classrooms this term and we have another action packed next half term.

Mrs Knox
Headmistress

Achievements
Toby Shaw competed in the Kettering Rugby Festival on Sunday, 16th October.
Olivia Edwards achieved 1st place and East Midland Regional Champion for U11 Girls Novice trampolining.
Isabelle Thomas achieved 2nd place in the U12 category and the most improved rider at the Weston Lawns Roy’s Memorial Equestrian Show.

Fiver Challenge Update
Whilst in Year 6, during the month of June, Flora Baxter, Meghan Griggs and Yasmine Hickey raised £278 from selling homemade fudge, truffles, cookies and cupcakes during the Fiver Challenge. They have decided to split the money equally between two local charities: ‘John Greenwood Shipman Centre’ and ‘Keep the Beat’. This is a great achievement and a very generous gesture by the girls.

Touch Typing
When we return after the half term holiday, I will be running a touch typing club for pupils in all year groups. This will take place in the Bedford ICT room from 12.10–12.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. All pupils are welcome to come and do some practise to improve their typing skills and speed.

Persistence Posters
Many thanks to all the pupils who have entered a poster into this competition. The deadline was 4.10pm today and the winner will be revealed at the first assembly after half term, when our Habit of Mind for the second half of term will be also announced.

Sunny Specs
This week, pupils in Year 5 have been seen around school wearing their ‘sunny specs’. This was part of their Wellbeing programme in Life Skills where they have been looking at approaching each day with a positive attitude and a smile.

Equestrian Team
An email was sent out to all parents at the beginning of this week to ask any pupils interested in being members of the equestrian team to send in a reply to Mrs Mason who does the administration for the team. If you did not receive the letter and are interested in your child joining the team, please email equestrian@wellingboroughschool.org for more information. I have made the decision to stand down from the position of Equestrian Team Manager after twelve years in the role, but I know that the new team of Mrs Selby, Mr Coles and Mrs Reade will do a great job in supporting our pupils at events throughout the year.

Positive Parents Programme
The next session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘Strengths of highly effective Parenting’ on 15th November. Click here for more details.

Anxiety in Children
As many of us are aware anxiety in children is on the rise and it is believed 8-11% of children now suffer from an anxiety that affects their ability to get on with their lives. Click here to view an interesting article from The Mental Health Foundation is attached, which gives an insight into this area as well as where to go for more support.

Mobile Phones
In the Prep School we maintain a strict rule against the use of mobile phones. Phones may only be brought into school when there is a clear and obvious need i.e. pupils travelling to school by bus or train. In this instance, pupils are asked to deposit their phone in to the Prep Office for safety and then collect at the end of the school day. Please could I ask that if you know your son or daughter is bringing their phone to school that, in accordance with our handbook, you advise the Prep Office, preferably by email prep-office@wellingboroughschool.org, to ensure that the phone is registered. It would be most helpful if you could also include the telephone number of the phone, which could be useful in the event of it being lost. Should your son or daughter be found in possession of their mobile phone during the day, it will be removed, placed in a safe place and you, as their parent/guardian, will be able to collect the item at the end of the day.

Daylight Centre Volunteering
As part of our Life Skills programme in the Prep School we are inviting the whole of Year 7 to help at the local Food Bank, which forms part of the Daylight Centre. As a school, we have been supporting the Daylight Centre Fellowship for a number of years through donations at harvest and through the winter months we have found that the centre struggles to sort their contributions. Whilst the pupils are at the Daylight Centre they will be helping volunteers sort food and clothes donations, that will then be given to local families in need. This is an excellent opportunity for the pupils to experience volunteering in the community first hand, whilst helping a local charity support local people.

Uniform
Following half term, pupils should return to school in winter uniform.  All pupils should wear long sleeved white shirts with a School tie and girls should wear either long grey socks or tights.

Nearly New Shop - Change of Staff and Opening Dates
After four years, almost £4,500 raised for the School plus over £4,200 given back to parents, Laureen and Lisa are handing over the running of the shop after half term. A big welcome to Catherine Maher and Dawn Turner and thank you for volunteering to take over - they are both parents of children in Year 5 and you may also know them from the Pre-Prep swap shop.  I would like to say a huge thank you to Lisa for all her hard work, to the Prep and Senior School staff for being so helpful and always smiling, and to all the parents who have donated or bought items from us. This is a really valuable service to parents and fundraiser at the same time and it is run by parents on an entirely voluntary basis so I hope you will continue to support Catherine and Dawn as much as you have myself and Lisa. You should note that the opening days and times will be changing to Mondays and Wednesdays click here for details. (NB. first date is Monday 7th November 3.45-4.30pm). Contact details are on the Nearly New Shop section on the School website so you can contact Catherine or Dawn if you can't make shop dates or need something urgently and they will be happy to arrange an alternative time. Thank you again for your support.

We burst into this half term with a full week of engaging learning activities and I am so pleased that the pupils and teachers have hit the road running. Things to look out for this term are our Anti-Bullying Week when our Year 8 Anti-Bullying Ambassadors will lead a range of activities to promote kindness and awareness of bullying and what to do about it, Year 7 volunteering at the Daylight Centre, our Club dancing and cross-country competitions, many sporting festivals and fixtures and, of course, in the lead up to the end of term, the Christmas Concert and the WPSA Christmas disco. We also have parent teacher evenings for our new pupils and Year 8 - full details to follow. Also to note, all pupils will receive a report at the end of the term.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of a Learning Development Manager replacing Mrs Louise Barltrop. Mrs Sam Bell joins us in January and is a highly experienced teacher. If you would like to meet Mrs Bell, we are holding a coffee drop-in morning on Friday 2nd December from 8.30 -10.00. Another date for your diary is Thursday 1st December when we are holding a parent drop in session at 3.00-4.30 ‘Do you have a question? Come and chat to the Prep School Team’. Please come and have your questions answered by myself and my leadership team.

Finally, I was very proud of the Prep School pupils today for the respect shown and participation in our Remembrance Day Service, a significant event as we acknowledged the sacrifices made by so many.

Volunteers Needed - National School Rugby Qualifiers – Sunday 20th November 2016
With the National School’s Rugby Tournament approaching, just over a week away, I can now confirm that this year’s qualifiers will be for the following age groups: U11, U10, U9 & U8. We will be entering a team in all age groups apart from the U8s competition. There is no competition this year for the U12s age group and the U13s qualifiers are to take place after Christmas.

We are still looking for a few more parents who may be interested in helping in the following areas:

  • Referees for the U9s and U10s age group
  • Stewards for the car park during the morning of the event 09.30 till 10.45am. We will be using 3 areas for parking to include the main School car park, the Embankment Golf Club and the entrance to our field parking from Bookers.
  • Pupils (Years 7 & 8) to help with collecting score cards between matches. We will provide food and drink for all pupils who are volunteering to help.

Anyone interested please email Mr Irvine on lji@wellingboroughschool.org as soon as possible to discuss further.

Achievements
Iris Kirk (Y7) was presented with two awards at the Northamptonshire County Cricket Awards Night, one for a clean bowled hat-trick and the other for taking 4 wickets in a match with bowling figures of 3 overs, 1 maiden, 4 wickets for 4 runs.
Lili Howe (Y6), Molly Barnes (Y8) and Charley Knight (Y7) all were invited to perform in the Dance Proms at The Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 30th October.
Harvey Boniface (Y5) has been selected to a Mascot at the Saints on Remembrance Sunday.
Libby Hawkins (Y8) has been invited to lead the violas for her County Music Group at the Royal Albert Hall on 16th November.

Habits of Mind
Thank you very much to all the pupils who entered a Persisting poster into the competition before half term – don’t forget to collect a plus! I am pleased to announce the results as follows:

  • 3rd Hettie Ivory and Holly Knighton
  • 2nd Libby Hawkins
  • 1st Sulaiman Ali, Finn Davern and Krish Patel

The winning poster will be on display shortly.

Our new Habit of Mind for this half of term is Taking Responsible Risks.  Pupils were introduced to this habit during their club meetings this week and I am looking for poster competition entries once again. In addition, we need to choose a theme tune/song for this habit. Any pupils (or parents) who have a suggestion please let me know as soon as possible so that we can make a choice and play it in assembly each week. Email ko@wellingboroughschool.org.

Library
Mr Medhurst, our Librarian, has appointed some Junior Librarians this week. These pupils will be assisting in the Library during break times and have made an enthusiastic start. Well done to them for volunteering and I am sure they will enjoy taking on the responsibility of this role.

Touch Typing
A new activity for this half of term is the Touch Typing Club which is taking place from 12.10–12.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. I would like to encourage pupils to come along to improve their typing speed and accuracy using fun games. This will be of benefit to their school work on the computer as well as being a valuable life skill. Pupils can choose to come to all three sessions if they wish to do so but there is no minimum requirement – they are welcome to attend on one or two days instead.

Positive Parents Programme
The next session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘Strengths of highly effective Parenting’ on 15th November. Click here for more details.

Buses
All pupils were reminded during Monday’s assembly that if they catch a bus home from School they must ensure they sign out at the Library with Mrs Wiggett. Could I please ask that parents whose children take a bus reinforce this message at home.  It is very important that we have accurate registers of all children leaving the School site on a bus.

Lunch Rota
Many pupils and parents have questioned the lunch rota over the last half of term and this has also been risen at our School Council meetings.  A decision has been made to change the lunch rota so that all year groups have the opportunity to go first to lunch and it is now as fair as it possibly can be. I know that this change has been welcomed by the pupils and long may this continue.

Year 4 History Lessons – old t-shirts required
If possible, please can you provide your child with an old, large t-shirt or painting apron to wear over their school clothes during History lessons next week. The larger the t-shirt the better as it covers more clothing! The pupils will be making, and painting, Roman shields in their lessons. Thank you in advance.

Year 6 Cote d’Opale Trip
On the morning of the 20th October, 55 excited pupils assembled in the hall in anticipation for an exciting French voyage! So as pupils said ‘au revoir’ to their families, off we left for the Opal Coast with a smooth journey into the Eurostar arriving on time at the centre for ‘poulet et frites’ at seven in the evening.

Friday proved to be a busy and exciting day starting with the Agincourt museum. Pupils learned about the Battle of Agincourt which was an incredible English victory in the Hundred Years' War. The battle took place on Friday, 25th October 1415, near Azincourt, in northern France. What was the date again Y6 and where was it? October 15th 1415….Agincourt…Agincourt….Agincourt!

After this we had the opportunity to learn and revise some French vocabulary at the Goats cheese farm, where we then travelled to the chocolaterie, (a highlight as always), where samples were scoffed and a lot of chocolates were bought!

We arrived in the market town of Boulogne-sur-mer to do a spot of shopping and practised some of our transactional French in the food market. There was plenty of things to taste and see including fresh patisseries bakery’s, French vegetables and flowers. After a quick shop, we walked through the town centre to explore one of Europe’s biggest aquarium Nausicaa! There were some interesting sights to see including the gigantic sea lions and dancing dolphins.

Monsieur Irvine et Richardson were determined to incorporate some cross-curricular sporting activities into the trip which included a big competitive game of football on the beach. Monsieur Coles also show cased his handstands and cartwheels on the beach! Overall, it was a hugely memorable and exciting first residential for Y6; may there be many more to come.

Year 7 Peak District Trip
Year 7 pupils left for the Peak District on Thursday 20th October. Firstly we went to Stanage Edge. It is a steep mountain but the difficult climb is worth it. The views at the top are stunning. We spent around 4 hours on a tour of Stanage Edge. My group went along the top to a small cave in the rock. Then we discussed the conflict between user groups that happens at Stanage Edge. Next we moved on to go down into a little woodland. In there we were pretending to be certain people that use the land and had a debate about our separate problems. Finally, we went down to see a local farm. The man who owned the farm had to have several different jobs to keep his farm going. We then went back to the youth hostel. There, we had a talk from a National Park Ranger about conflict. On the Friday we went to look at Mam Tor the ‘Shivering Mountain’. Then we went into the caves. These are famous because they are one of the only mines that produces Blue John. This is a blue and yellow rock. They also showed us lots of stalagmites and stalactites. Then we drew a field sketch from the entrance to the cave of all of the mountains, fields and villages. Next we walked around Castleton. Some people took photographs, some people did traffic counts and some people gave locals questionnaires. Finally we went to see a limestone quarry. It was about a mile in length and it would take you about an hour to walk across. A large truck came and we all had a go it sitting in the driver’s seat. Lastly, the truck driver lifted the bucket on the back so that we could see it happening and then drove back to the quarry. Then 80 tired Year 7 pupils and teachers went home for half term! Masters Indoor Cricket World Series
Thank you to all of you who watched and supported me during my recent Indoor Cricket World Series. It was great to know that I had people supporting me from home. It was an amazing experience to play against the three top sides in the world at this form of the game. Although we did not win, we did well for a team that had only been together for three months playing against sides that have known each other (and played the game) for many years. We learnt a huge amount from the experience and had many positive comments from all who watched us play. I made many new friends and it is definitely an experience that I will never forget. Dubai is now calling in three years time - watch this space!

Poetry Assembly
Congratulations to all pupils who recited their poems in front of the Prep School on Monday and those who performed in front of their peers in class. They all spoke clearly and confidently in their recitals and had obviously spent a great deal of time getting to know their poem. A number of parents have spoken to me recently about the increased level of confidence they have seen in their children through opportunities such as these to present in front of an audience. It's never too early to encourage children to stand up in front of people and perform. Performance doesn't have to be learning lots of lines for a play; it can be as simple as singing a song, reciting a favorite poem or even doing a school talk. The more we encourage children to speak, the greater the likelihood that their self-confidence will increase with each experience. It can definitely be terrifying to get up in front of a crowd of people and try to captivate them with words. Being able to speak confidently in front of a group of people is a valuable skill, though. Click here to view an article from Mrs Drye.

This fits perfectly with our Habit of Mind this half term - Taking Responsible Risks. We are encouraging our pupils to learn how to take intellectual as well as physical risks. People who are capable of being different, thinking of new ideas and testing them with peers as well as teachers, are more likely to be successful in this age of innovation and uncertainty.

Staff
Sadly, for family reasons, Mr Lester Q Williams, who joined us in September, will not be returning to school for the remainder of this term.  As you will be aware, we have already appointed Mrs Lucie Hancock as a permanent Mathematics and Geography teacher from January 2017 and we look forward to her joining the Prep School team. In the meantime, we are pleased to welcome Mr Gerry Purcell, an experienced mathematics teacher, who will be joining us for the remainder of the Michaelmas term.

New Pupils Parents Evenings
The teachers and I are looking forward to meeting the parents of our new pupils (Years 5-7) next Tuesday, 22nd November. Details of how to book meetings has been clarioned.

A message of Good Luck
I would like to wish our teams the best of luck competing in the National Schools Rugby Qualifiers this weekend. Thank you to all the volunteers. Let’s hope we see some dry weather and lots of sunshine!

Achievements
Omar Ghanem (Y7) participated in the National Swim Gala for Virgin Active Clubs  and achieved a gold medal for the 50 meters breaststroke finishing in 40 seconds. The event took place in the Olympic Pool in London.
Emilie Adams (Y8) achieved 3rd place in the 60cm showjumping with her pony Laddie at the Moulton Equestrian Centre, Unaffiliated Jumping Event.
James Taylor-Lewis was awarded Best All Rounder at Olney Rugby Club.

Equestrian
Prep School had a busy equestrian weekend with Isabelle, Oliver and Clara from the Prep School competing in the Akeley Wood Show Jumping Competition, held at Addington Manor. There were some lovely clear rounds at the competition and the pupils competed very well. We would also like to wish the very best of luck to Clara, Oliver, Niall and Lucy who are competing at the forthcoming Grass Roots Championships at Bury Farm.

Year 4 History
The Year 4 floor has been a hive of activity this week as Miss Kingstone and the pupils have been making their own Roman shields. The corridors have been lined with the products of their labours and we look forward to seeing them put to use, perhaps in some battle formations in future history lessons.

Year 7 Volunteering at the Daylight Centre
Last Friday the first Year 7 group visited the Daylight Centre in Wellingborough to help sort and pack the food that has been donated. The pupils worked efficiently, checking use by dates and categorising food ready to be put into bags for individuals who are in need. They learnt about the different types of people who use the Centre and how the food packages need to be made up with their differing needs in mind. The second group of pupils visited the Centre today and we look forward to the rest of the year group taking their turn in the weeks ahead.

Online Safety
This week I attended a course at the Northamptonshire Police Headquarters about Online Safety. This is an area which we cover in school and we work very hard to ensure there is a whole school approach rather than just in our IT or PSHE curriculum, however, in reality this is a whole school community issue and want to share some concerning statistics from the course:

  • 88% of all images that go onto social media end up on other websites without us realising
  • Groomers strike on the most vulnerable young people and often get their ‘hook’ from statuses young people use on social media such as ‘I’m having such a bad day’ ‘I’m grounded again’ and ‘I hate my parents!’
  • Groomers will contact over 100 young people a day; they are not looking for one particular child, but just a particular response from a child to initiate their attack

We cannot stop our young people from using the internet or social media but it is vital that our children know of the dangers and perhaps more importantly what to do and where to go if they are concerned. A really useful website for parents to start discussions with their children is: www.nspcc.org.uk/shareaware There is also an app called NetAware which you can download which gives lots of information about social media and how to ensure your children are using the internet safely. Please do get in touch if you wish to discuss further.

Anti-Bullying Week
Next week we are celebrating Anti-Bullying Week and the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have been working tirelessly with Mrs Rowley-Burns to arrange a wide variety of activities.  The week will be explained to the pupils during Monday’s assembly and a full report on the activities and success will be reported in next week’s newsletter.

School Council and Charities Committee
I was really pleased to have a short meeting this week with two of our school council members about ideas they wanted to implement at the end of term. It is great to see that our pupil voice is alive and kicking and that they are confident in believing they can make a difference in our school.  I know that the Charities Committee also have lots of new and exciting ideas to engage the school in raising funds for the British Heart Foundation and I am looking forward to seeing these in action this term.

Year 6 River Study at Stanwick Lakes
On Tuesday 15th November 2016, 58 Year 6 students visited Stanwick Lakes to learn more about river processes and formations. Thankfully, the weather remained dry and it was very mild for this time of year. Students took part in three sessions over the course of the morning, looking at the river flow rate, flooding on the river (and how it can be managed), and also river landforms and habitats. Students completed tasks on their worksheets, and learnt about flow rate by dropping an apple into the channel and timing how long it took the apple to travel the specified distance. Students were able to see the physical processes and features found along the river, which they will be studying in more detail during their Geography lessons over the coming weeks. In sum, a fantastic trip, with amazingly well-behaved students. Many thanks to the staff involved, the Ranger Service at Stanwick Lakes and to Mr Batley for volunteering again. Mr Batley has certainly become an honorary geographer with all his trip volunteering!

Anti-Bullying Week
Anti-Bullying Week has been a real highlight in the Prep School this week. It has given us a perfect platform to engage with the pupils on this important issue, to take a stand against bullying and raise awareness of bullying and the support the School provides. I would like to commend the ABA's, capably lead  by  Mrs Rowley-Burns, for their excellent leadership throughout the week.

Year 8 Parents' Evening
I look forward to welcoming Year 8 parents to our Parents’ Evening on Monday as we discuss the progress the children are making. These evenings are so important and further the valuable partnership between the School and parents. It was a pleasure welcoming all of our new parents to the School this week to discuss the progress the pupils are making. It was pleasing to hear that they are all settling in well, finding their feet and new friends and are now embracing the busy routine of the Prep School. Parents’ Evenings for Years 4-7 will take place early next term.

Christmas Events
Christmas celebrations are just around the corner and I was delighted to accept an invitation from the Pre-Prep to their superb Christingle Service today. The Prep School pupils are already talking about the WPSA Christmas Disco and the teachers about the Staff Panto!

Enjoy the weekend and the week ahead.

Achievements
Tanaka Jalathge (8WR) performed at the NMPAT Autumn Festival of Music, in front of a packed audience at the Spinney Theatre, Northampton. She was a violinist in the County Training String Orchestra (CTS).

Crime and Punishment
I enjoyed seeing a Year 6 History lesson this week where the class were debating the pros and cons of the justice system in the Middle Ages in comparison to the Modern Age. There were some very reasoned arguments and it was interesting to hear different pupils' points of view about whether punishments for crimes nowadays are severe enough or not!

Growth Mindset
All our pupils from Year 4 to Year 8 have taken the PASS survey (Pupil Attitudes to Self and School) during their Life Skills lessons. This will enable us to gain valuable insight into attitudes that could be hindering achievement. The survey helps to detect possible barriers to learning, including issues around confidence, resilience, motivation and concentration. Research has shown that pupils who do not have high self-belief underachieve and are more likely to become disengaged with their learning.  A DfE Research Report on The Impact of Behaviour and Wellbeing on Educational Outcomes said "Children with higher levels of emotional, behavioural, social, and school wellbeing, on average, have higher levels of academic achievement and are more engaged in school."

The PASS survey should give us an insight into pupils' mindsets that might be otherwise difficult to gain.  We aim to encourage a 'growth mindset' in our pupils rather than a 'fixed' one.  This creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for future accomplishment.

Anti-Bullying Week 2016
We are privileged again this year to have a keen group of Anti-Bullying Ambassadors supporting their peers in the life of the School. To mark Anti-Bullying Week they have helped organise a string of activities to promote a positive atmosphere in school and also make themselves known to their peers, whilst raising awareness of bullying. To start, the pupils were invited to make loom bands for one another, possibly making one for a friend in the School. On Tuesday everyone made a hand print on a large board that will be hung on the side of the Robinson Centre, each colour representing each club. On Wednesday it was ‘Random Act of Kindness’ day where pupils were encouraged to do something kind for someone in the school. On Thursday pupils had a balloon stamp to ‘STAMP out Bullying’ and a tree of thoughts decorated in blue, the colour of the ABA badge. To finish off the week the pupils were invited to ‘Wear Something Blue’ and donate £1 to the School charity. Overall it has been a very exciting week with fun activities that were enjoyed by the school community to promote a greater awareness of bullying and the support that the School provides. Thank you to Mrs Rowley-Burns and the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors for their hard work.

Equestrian News
NSEA Grass Roots Regional Cha
mpionships
After a very early 5.45am start for the School Equestrian Team they all met at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre near Leighton Buzzard for the NSEA Grass Roots Regional Championships 2016. The team had previously qualified for the 40cm and 50cm classes respectively.  Lucy Morris, Clara Holley and Niall Mahon all tried their hardest in the 40cm class but it did not go their way.  Onwards and upwards to the 50cm class where the team now including Oliver Morris were determined to improve on the 40cm class. Two beautiful clear rounds from Oliver and Clara helped the team on their way to the ribbons. Persistence paid off and they finished a very respectable 6th place overall. Oliver then competed in the 60cm as an individual. This was an extremely strong class and he did amazingly well to come 4th out of 60 other riders. Huge congratulations to them all - it really is a great achievement.

Arena UK Equestrian
Isabelle Thomas was awarded 3rd place rosette in 60-65cm and achieved double clear in 70-75cm and 80-85cm showjumping at the Arena UK event.

Christmas Celebrations
December is now finally upon us and preparations for Christmas are in earnest, with Christmas trees around the School grounds and decorated classrooms giving a festive feel to the School. The orchestra and choir have been enthusiastically rehearsing in preparation for the various events and I am really looking forward to the Christmas Concert on Saturday which promises to be an excellent evening. Of course, the Christmas Disco is soon upon us, so now is the time to note the details below.

Wellingburian
The Wellingburian magazine will be reaching you soon in which a year in the life of the school is fully captured. As I leaf through the pages, I am captivated by the breadth and depth of the school activity and the opportunities afforded to and embraced by the pupils. Congratulations to our Foundation Office for the production of a very high quality publication.

Do you have a question? Come and chat
My leadership team and I enjoyed meeting parents at our “Do you have a question? Come and chat” afternoon on Thursday. We discussed a range of topics from challenging our most able, assessment and reporting, tracking pupil progress, communication, to show my homework, speech and drama, sports fixtures and clubs. We will hold another session in the Lent term.

WPSA Christmas Discos
The ever popular Christmas discos will take place in the Prep School Hall on Thursday, 15th December.

  • 4.30pm-6.00pm Years 4, 5 & 6
  • 6.30pm-8.00pm Years 7 & 8

Tickets are £5.00 and are available to purchase from the Prep Office from Monday, 5th December. There will be drinks and a tuck shop and it would be appreciated if pupils could bring a small amount of loose change, rather than notes. The ever popular photo booth will also be available and all those who attend will be given a copy of the photographs on a DVD. Pupils should be collected from the Prep Hall at the end of the disco. If you would like to assist on the night please contact WPSA@wellingboroughschool.org - all help will be very much appreciated.

End of Term Carol Service
The end of term Carol Service will be held at All Saints Church in Wellingborough on Friday, 16th December at 11.30am. There are a limited number of seats available at the church, therefore only two places can be reserved and these will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Further details will be sent via clarion. I look forward to seeing you there.

Headmistress

Pupil Reports
At the end of this term you will receive a report detailing your child’s effort for Michaelmas term and the progress they have made in each subject based upon their individual target and the WPS standard. The WPS standard aims to provide you with context about your child’s ability in relation to age expectation at WPS. All pupils will receive a written form tutor comment and pupils in Years 4 to 7 will also receive subject comments from your child’s teachers.

Year 4 Active Learning
This week I have watched the concentration on the faces of Year 4 pupils as they carried out drills and marching in formation, not only as convincing Roman soldiers, but also by following instructions in Latin! They have also participated in memorable Science lessons about digestion where they made their own digestive systems and observed the changes to food as it moved through the different areas including teeth and saliva (cutlery and water), oesophagus (cardboard tube), stomach and stomach acid (bag and orange juice) and intestines (tights). Much fun was had by all and the learning resulting from this practical activity was evident in the pupils’ written recounts of their experiences.

Cross Country Club
Every Tuesday night at 4:15 until 5.15pm, pupils from Years 4 to 8 meet at the cricket nets with Mrs McDougall and Mr Burrows or Mr Russell.  We complete some warm-up exercises before doing a 1.2 mile run around the school. The mile takes us through various areas of the school and every week it is getting muddier and darker, but everyone still has lots of fun! We have been bringing in head torches now that it is so dark. As well as running we also complete some interval training, which involves sprinting and resting activities. This year we will be completing a Christmas themed ‘fun run’ where everybody brings in Christmas hats, jumpers and light up laces. After the mile run there’s hot chocolate and biscuits which will be well deserved I am sure.

The excitement is mounting within the School as we gradually move towards Christmas and a well-earned break. Our Head Boy, Head Girl and School Captains ran a superb assembly this morning which made us reflect on the real purpose of Christmas which is as much about giving as about receiving. I would like to commend all of our Year 8s for their leadership this term. They are true role models for our younger pupils.

I would like to take this opportunity to say farewell and thank Louise Barltrop who completed her final day at school today. She has been supporting us through a transition process this term and we look forward to welcoming Sam Bell in January. We are also looking forward to welcoming Lucie Hancock, our new Maths and Geography teacher, who joins us in January. Mrs Hancock has been spending time getting to know the pupils and this morning met a number of parents whose children she will be teaching next year.

On Sunday, I was extremely moved by the joint Prep and Senior School Christmas Concert. Watching the younger musicians sitting shoulder to shoulder with the older pupils making beautiful music was such a wonderful sight. Congratulations to Mr Leutfeld and all of the musicians.

As the year draws to a close, I am getting to the end of my “firsts” and I am particularly looking forward to getting to the end of my “first” appearance in the staff panto. Will it be the “last” I wonder? Thank you to the many, many parents who have asked how we are settling in and whether we are finally used to the weather. The answer to that is definitely: no! Never mind, Spring can’t be too far away, can it?

Homework Timetable
This week we have undertaken a termly review of the homework Timetable following the changes made at the beginning of this academic year.  In particular, we have looked at homework for our older pupils, with a view to preparing them for the move to Senior School.  We aim to achieve a balance between supporting them in organising their time and enabling them to take responsibility for their own learning by developing their independence.  Parents will receive a copy of the updated Lent term homework timetable before the start of next term.

Carbon Monoxide
“If we’d have had a carbon monoxide alarm that night, then Dominic would be here today.” The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) has issued a warning to all parents on the dangers of Carbon Monoxide. A ten year old boy, Dominic, died when a neighbour’s faulty boiler leaked carbon monoxide gas through the wall and into his bedroom. But wherever there is a fuel-burning appliance or open fire, there is a risk of a carbon monoxide leak. Carbon monoxide is often called ‘the silent killer’ because you can’t see it, smell it or taste it. Children are particularly vulnerable to carbon monoxide because their bodies are smaller and not yet fully-developed. There are also concerns that low level exposure to carbon monoxide can damage a child’s developing brain.
How to protect your family from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed! Is the national campaign to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by carbon monoxide. It sets out four simple steps:

  • Fit audible carbon monoxide alarms in every room with a fuel-burning appliance;
  • Ensure that appliances are properly ventilated at all times;
  • Ensure that all fuel-burning appliances (such as boilers, cookers, and fires) are regularly serviced; and
  • Get to know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.

A Plea from DT
DT would like any old, plain coloured t-shirts that are made as a tube. Ms Mason is looking at a future up-cycling project and these will help make yarn. They must be a tube with no seams at the sides please. If they can come into DT lessons with pupils that would be greatly appreciated.

Ms Mason

DT Clubbers
The DT clubbers have spent the Michaelmas term working on a cool woodwork project. They are creating a Hedgehog pencil holder from MDF. The pupils have learnt how to use hand saws, scroll saws and apply paint. Some of the Year 7 students have been looking into the next project. We are taking part in the Bloodhound SSC car challenge. For more details click here.  The clubbers will have to develop an aerodynamic car powered by a rocket motor. They will then race against other local schools and will try to qualify for the national finals. New members are welcome to join in after school on a Thursday.

This last week has seen Christmas festivities go into overdrive. There was a fine collection of Christmas jumpers on Thursday and for this privilege the pupils paid a pound. We raised over £300 for the British Heart Foundation. The staff also joined in and our own Mrs Billington won the best Christmas jumper award. The inaugural Club Dance competition was a fantastic way to start the day. Congratulations to Jaguars for their fine rendition of “Thriller”.

Following our Christmas lunch, for which we must thank Elaine O’Sullivan and the Chartwells team, the pupils were treated to the staff rendition of “Sleeping Beauty”. It certainly won the approval of all those in the audience. Finally, the pupil disco, which was a lovely way to end an exciting day. The pupils had a hugely enjoyable time and my thanks to the WPSA for their superb orchestration.

Our Carol Service was a beautiful way to end an incredibly busy and action packed term. I would like to thank the Prep School staff for their energy, commitment and dedication to the pupils and School this term. I have watched many pupils grow in confidence in themselves and in their learning and, as a Headmistress, it gives me great pleasure to watch them sparkle and shine. Australian psychologist and author Steve Biddulph in his books says ‘spark’ helps every child get their roots deep down into who they are. “Children and young teenagers always have something inside them”, he writes. “An interest, enthusiasm, talent, or concern for service. If it’s supported, it gives them incredible motivation, joy and direction. That thing is their spark.” This term, many of our pupils have found their spark because they could.

I wish you and your family a joyful and peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year.

Mrs Knox
Headmistress

What Makes an Excellent Lesson?
The Michaelmas term has been a busy one in the classroom and I have been pleased to have had so many opportunities to see lessons in action across different subjects and year groups.  As a staff, we have been focusing on ‘What Makes an Excellent Lesson?’ and, in the Lent term, we will be carrying out regular Learning Walks throughout the School.  In addition, our two year appraisal cycle has started and is linked to continuous professional development for all staff in order to maintain a focus on best practice.  One of my personal highlights of the term has been my regular ‘band of boys’ who attend touch typing club.  They have already identified for themselves the potential benefits of this skill as they move through to the Senior School and beyond.  It was extremely satisfying to see the progress they have made in a short amount of time – they were rightly proud of the speed and accuracy of their typing at the end of term, compared with their scores six weeks ago.  We do have room for more pupils to join us in January, at 12.10pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Bedford ICT room.

Charity Update
A huge thank you to all parents and pupils who have supported the charity events held during Michaelmas term. We are very pleased to announce that the total raised so far, including Christmas Jumper Day, is £1,353.62. This is a fantastic start to our fundraising efforts for the British Heart Foundation. Thank you for your support.

Our first week has brought the usual plethora of activities and there is a sense of business and excitement around the School. In our first School assembly, I talked to the pupils about a new term and new beginnings and the opportunity to set themselves new challenges. Today in form time, they have been setting their academic, personal and wellbeing goals for the term. I have enjoyed walking around the School seeing how the form groups are displaying these. I particularly liked Mrs Drye’s football themed goal display. I also talked to the pupils about considering what their “legacy” might be in the Prep School. What they want us to remember them for. Will it be their kindness, care for others or positivity. Will it be their passion for learning, spirit or determination to give everything a go. My vision is for each pupil in the Prep School to be known and respected for their skills, abilities and character.

The WPSA met last night to begin planning for the Race Night on Friday 3rd March. For those who haven’t attended one before, it will certainly be a night of highly enjoyable entertainment as we “spend a night at the races”. Please add the date to you diary.

This week, we welcomed two new members of staff and a short introduction is below. Both Mrs Bell and Mrs Hancock are looking forward to meeting you at the upcoming Parent Teacher evenings. We are also delighted with how our five new pupils have settled in and my thanks to their guardians for making them so welcome. I am delighted to announce that Mrs Claire Petrie our Deputy Head, Pastoral, is expecting a baby. She and her husband James are naturally delighted and we wish them all the very best as they prepare for parenthood.

I wish you, our pupils and staff a most excellent term.

Mrs Sue Knox
Headmistress

Habit of Mind
Congratulations to Anna Gouldstone who won the Habit of Mind competition at the end of last term with her Taking Responsible Risks poster. Her winning entry, along with the previous Persisting poster will soon be seen displayed around School.  This half term we are focusing on Managing Impulsivity so we are encouraging the pupils to stop and think before they act. Once again, I am looking for pupils to design original posters for this Habit of Mind – the deadline for submitting entries is 10th February.

Cookery Club
Our brand new afterschool activity this term is Cookery Club which has been enthusiastically received by the pupils. They were even cheerful in their washing up and tidying the kitchen afterwards! Their first recipe was for rock buns and the reports that came back from home after sampling were all very positive. Next week we will be making cheese straws which I am sure will be equally delicious.

Positive Parents Programme
The next session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘Five keys to children’s success and happiness - including healthy relationships’ on 16th January 2017. Click here for more details.

Absences
As per the Guide to the School please can I remind all parents of the following procedures for absence requests:

  • Procedures for Illness or Indisposition
Parents or guardians must telephone or email the School office between 8.30-9.15am on each day of absence. Tel: 01933 222698 or email prep-office@wellingboroughschool.org. Pupils who are not fit enough to take part in Games should bring a note signed by a parent or guardian to the Director of Sport on the morning of Games. A dated note from the School Nurse may be used in an emergency.
  • Permission for Absence
Children should only be taken out of school in exceptional circumstances.  Permission should be obtained in advance from the Headmistress via email prep-head@wellingboroughschool.org. Please arrange vacations in holiday periods only. It is disruptive to your child’s education to miss periods of schooling unnecessarily and important events often take place at the beginning and end of terms.  It is necessary to obtain permission to miss any lesson or school fixture.

Deodorant
Our Year 6 pupils are all being spoken to by the School Nurses this term on the subject of puberty.  One of the areas which they are spoken to about is body odour and the use of deodorant.  The use of deodorant in the mornings is something we encourage all pupils from Year 6 and above to use, as well as following games or PE activities within School.  We recommend pupils bring in ‘roll on’ deodorants rather than aerosols and would like to ask for parents support with this.

Mrs Petrie
Deputy Head - Pastoral

New Staff
Sam Bell – Head of Learning Development
I have started at Wellingborough School this week as Head of Learning Development for the Prep and Pre-Prep Schools. I have moved here from a special school in Bedford where I was a class teacher, working with pupils with a range of severe learning difficulties.  I am married with two sons aged 14 and 20 and a very devoted golden retriever. In my spare time I enjoy long walks in the countryside and I have a passion for musical theatre which has recently extended to opera, albeit with subtitles! I am passionate about ensuring each child maximises their potential so I look forward to settling into my new role and getting to know you and your children.

Mrs Bell
Head of Learning Development

Lucie Hancock – Teacher of Maths and Geography
I have started Wellingborough School this week as Teacher of Maths and Geography for the Prep School. I have now been teaching for 16 years. I started in the state sector and worked in a wide variety of schools; spending 5 years in a girls’ grammar school in Kent.  On moving back to Northamptonshire, I have worked in a small independent school near Milton Keynes for the past 7 years. I have taught across the age ranges from Year 5 to Year 13 during this time. I have two young children who love gymnastics and football and so we spend plenty of time ferrying them around and trying to keep active as a family. I am a qualified gym and boxercise instructor and have trained for triathalons and 10km races over recent years to ensure I keep up with them. As your son or daughter’s teacher, it is my goal to help him/her become a confident learner and I will do my best to help make this year a positive experience for your child. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child throughout the coming year, which surely promises to bring with it, many new experiences and challenges.

Mrs Hancock
Teacher of Maths and Geography

Prep School Ski Tip
This year the ski trip was another great success and the strength in numbers was testament to this. On the last day of term 41 children, 5 staff and 15 parents set off for Austria. We had good snow again this year and as always the slopes were almost deserted. The Ski Astons team were superb and everyone's skiing progressed well. I would like to thank Mr Richardson, Mrs Ferguson, Mrs Whitaker and Miss Clark for all their hard work; the children for their energy at the end of a long term and the parents for their help and support throughout. To view a report from Rhianna Osborne (Y8) please click here.

We love it when you, our parents, are involved in School activities. Whether it is accompanying a class on a school trip, dressing up in Victorian Costume for History day or helping out in Cookery Club. You are an important ingredient in pupil success!

We are also really keen to use your expertise in our classrooms. Last year, Dr. Cox, a cardiologist, came in to explain the heart and its functions to a Science class. He brought with him his ultrasound scanner and scanned his son’s heart allowing the pupils to observe the valves letting blood in and out of the heart. This was followed by a heart dissection of a sheep. The class thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from his participation.

We are keen to hear from any parent who would like to come and talk to the pupils. Either to share with them the work they do, the people they help or to talk about their career path. It is incredibly important for children to hear from a multitude of people as they begin to form their views of possible paths in life. Please email prep-head@wellingboroughschool.org if you would like to come and share your story. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • “We know what we are but know not what we may be.”
                                                                                        - Shakespeare

It was a pleasure talking to parents of Year 4 pupils on Tuesday at the Parent Teacher Evening and my team and I are looking forward to discussing the progress of pupils in other year groups over the coming weeks. A positive parent-teacher relationship is another contributing factor to your child’s school success.

You will know that Mrs Lucie Hancock joined us this term teaching Maths and Geography. She will be shadowing Mrs Ferguson for a short while and getting to know 5JF.

Changes to Communication
As a whole School, and following feedback from parents regarding the amount of communication sent, we are trialling a new system for communication. Please see below an extract from the Headmaster’s Blog No. 14.

  • … being mindful of the frequency of communication from the School and the desire to improve this, the Whole School will be trialling a single day of communication by Clarion Call on a Wednesday each week, beginning next week (Wednesday 18th January). This will mean that if you receive any communication from us on a Wednesday it is relevant to your son or daughter and will frequently necessitate a reply…

We would be grateful to receive your feedback on how this new system is working over the next few weeks.

Headmistress

Korea School Swap
Something that is well worth a watch, if you have some spare time, is 'Korea School Swap' which is available on BBC iPlayer – click here. Three pupils from a school in Wales spend a number of days in a South Korean High School and experience an education system which is very different to ours. Having worked in a school in Korea myself, I found it a very interesting programme which prompts a number of questions about the ways in which children are educated.  .

Here is a sample of some of the highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from Mrs Simmons and Mrs McMillan.

Year 4 English
This term in English Year 4 will be 'writing for different purposes.' They will look at audience, purpose and text structure. This week they started with how to set out instructions effectively. Some have enjoyed Mrs McDougall's cake baking, where after careful measuring, whisking, cracking and stirring, 16 perfectly formed and iced cakes appeared from her magic oven. Mrs Simmons' class have been thinking about the best ingredients for a delicious smoothie and what imperative verbs to include in the instructions. But who was brave enough to sample the fruity health drink concocted by 4AS? Did it tickle the taste buds or leave some reeling from the unusual blending of flavours? Next week, you can ask 4AK whose sandwich was the jammiest and who forgot the margarine!

Mrs Simmons
Year 4 Co-ordinator

Year 5 Science
The Year 5 children are certainly looking forward to their next Science topic - Earth, Moon and Sun, following a visit to school by astronomer, Mr Andrew Green. The hall was taken over by his mobile planetarium and as they entered, and the lights were dimmed, the gasps from the children emphasised their wonder and excitement. We had a speedy tour all around the world spotting star clusters, galaxies and planets. We learned about black holes and meteorites, the Great Square of Pegasus and the Summer Triangle. Mr Green shared with us ancient myths and tales of how other cultures have interpreted the night sky. He quizzed the children about what they had learned and they, and the adults present, had certainly added exciting facts to their knowledge on our Solar System.

Mrs McMillan
Teacher of Science

Year 6 Life Skills
During Life Skills lessons this week the School Nurses have been talking to the Year 6 pupils about puberty. The children had the opportunity to ask questions and uncover any misconceptions they may have had as well as engaging in activities to help their understanding. Many thanks to Sarah and Philippa for these sessions.

Mrs Owen
Deputy Head – Curriculum

Year 7 Buddy Scheme
Several Year 8 and Year 4 pupils spoke about their experiences of our 'Buddy Scheme' to Year 7, in an assembly this week. This term, Year 7 pupils will be able to work with children in the Pre-Prep School, by supporting them in the classroom with their reading and writing and also in the playground by playing and talking with them. This is an exciting opportunity and introduces the idea of buddying to our children at a time when they have more understanding of the world of work and it will give them the chance to experience this first hand, whilst developing confidence and responsibility at the same time.

Anti-Bullying Pupil Survey
The Anti-Bullying Ambassadors have produced a survey that has been sent out to all Prep School pupils. They hope that it will allow us to understand how our pupils feel about school and allow them to find ways of further supporting our pupils day-to-day. All pupils that participle will be entered into a prize draw. All feedback is valuable to us, so spread the word.

Country of the Day
To continually improve location knowledge in the Prep School, here is a daily challenge from 6LW. Your focus for each day is to locate the country on a map! If that is too easy, there are some extension questions too…

  • Daily challenge:
    Monday 23rd January - Cuba
    Tuesday 24th January - Somalia
    Wednesday 25th January - Canada
    Thursday 26th January - Philippines
    Friday 27th January - Estonia
  • Extension questions:
    1.   What is the capital city of this country?
    2.   What does the flag look like?
    3.   How many people live in this country?
    4.   What are the most notable features of this country?

Year 8 Play 'Treasure Island'
What a wonderful performance of Treasure Island we were treated to last night! This highly entertaining adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel finds young Jim Hawkins as he discovers a treasure map in a dead pirate's sea-chest. Jim is led on an expedition across the ocean to recover a fortune in plundered gold. I would like to commend our Year 8 pupils on an outstanding performance. Mr Hargreaves, director extraordinaire, is also to be congratulated. As one member of the audience commented: “the Year 8 plays are always a highlight of the year for me” and another “I am amazed at how the Hall was transformed into a ship for the night”. Bravo to all cast and crew. A superb production.

Young Voices
Good luck to the 60 pupils who are performing at the Young Voices Concert tonight. 5,000 children will be singing together and nothing  can prepare you for the sound of thousands of children singing in harmony. Young Voices combines the power of singing together as one, with accompaniment from a wide range of musicians and artists, to create an amazing performance. Thank you to Mr Leutfeld for preparing them so beautifully. Enjoy!

Staff
Finally, it is with a heavy heart, that I advise that Mr Lee Irvine and Mr Steve Groom will be leaving us at the end of this academic year in July. Mr Irvine has been offered a promotional position as Director of Sport at the newly opened Rugby School in Thailand and Mr Groom will be retiring. We look forward, later in the year, to thanking them for their outstanding contribution to the school.

Internet Safety: Understanding Terms and Conditions
Many of us ignore what is written in the terms and conditions of the internet and software services that we use on a daily basis. This is a gross misjudgement, but who has time to do that and don't we trust those companies to look after our data properly. The Children's Commissioner published a report recently called 'Growing Up Digital'. The report makes interesting reading, but one aspect particularly caught media attention. Around half of 8-15 year olds use Instagram. The 'Growing Up Digital' report authors asked legal firm, Schillings, to look over the 17 pages of Instagram's Terms and Conditions, written at a level that could only be understood by a graduate. Schillings own lawyers simplified the T&Cs to help children (and the rest of us probably) understand what they mean. Here are two of the reader-friendly clauses:

  • "Officially you own any original pictures and videos you post, but we are allowed to use them, and we can let others use them as well, anywhere around the world. Other people might pay us to use them and we will not pay you for that." (or put more simply, we can sell the stuff you upload without asking you or paying you.)
  • "We might send you adverts connected to your interests which we are monitoring. You cannot stop us doing this and it will not always be obvious that it is an advert." (or put more simply, we can send you stuff and you won't know it’s an advert.)

We all have a right to know about this, and children need educating about it.

London Marathon
In April of this year, Mrs McDougall will be setting out to achieve a long term goal of running the London Marathon whilst raising money for Phab Kids. This is a charity which sends disabled children and those with complex needs on residential trips, enabling them to experience and enjoy greater independence and freedom. Through taking part in a range of fun and challenging activities the children are able to build confidence, independence and self-esteem whilst breaking down barriers and building friendships. If you would like to sponsor Mrs McDougall please click here. In addition, as part of the fundraising effort, on Friday, 10th February, we will be having a Crazy Hair Day, where the children can come to school sporting some mad hair styles (no hair dye please) and make a donation of £1. We will also be having a cake sale on the same day and would welcome any cake donations

Equestrian
On Saturday 21st January our School Equestrian Team of Keira, Alice, and Izzy attended the Cedars Upper School NSEA Showjumping qualifiers at Bury Farm, Bucks. The 90cm class took place indoors and all our riders rode brilliantly achieving 5th place out of 13 teams. They were also the highest placed Northamptonshire team and qualified for the NSEA County Championships in April. Izzy and Duke also came 7th individually out of 78 riders. Sadly the 80cm was outdoors and following several days of freezing conditions, the ground was just too hard and so the team decided to withdraw.  The organisers very kindly permitted Izzy to swap her 80cm entry for the 1m class which was indoors and although just out of the placings Izzy was the highest placed Northamptonshire rider qualifying her for the County Championships in the 1m class. Huge congratulations to everyone for doing so well at this popular event and we look forward to attending the County Championships which will take place on 21st April. Our thanks as always, also to our parents for their time and support in enabling the School to be represented.

Sports Achievements
Etienne Maughan (Y7) competed at her first indoor athletics event last weekend which was held at Lee Valley Indoor Stadium. There were 71 competitors competing in the race, which meant 10 heats. Etienne ran 8.36 in the heats and 8.33 in the final, which placed her in 4th place. Etienne’s time then placed her 6th overall in the country at U13 level, for the indoor season so far. This is a fantastic start to her indoor season and we, at Wellingborough School, wish her the very best.

Three Year 6 girls passed their ISTD grade two modern exam with Miss Viv School of Dance - Isabella Haines (distinction), Jemima Peel (merit) and Ellie Waters (merit).

As I watch our Club Captains, Charity and School Council Leaders, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Guardians and others going about their roles throughout the week, I am reminded of the importance of asking our pupils to lead. As adults, we know that leadership skills can take years of rigorous, disciplined practice to perfect. It is therefore crucial that our children develop these skills as they progress through school. At Wellingborough School, there are a myriad of opportunities to lead and we encourage our pupils to seize all opportunities.

Often the true test of a leader is those who may not hold a formal role in the school, but still look to make a difference in a local or global arena. Today’s young people are the leaders of tomorrow and as Nelson Mandela said “What counts in life in not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”. It may be that they lead from behind, without the title or mantle of leadership and show support and cooperation with others, offer criticism and compassion where needed in order to gain the best outcomes.

It is important that our pupils develop themselves as leaders. Perseverance, grit and dogged determination will allow them to grow and embrace future difficulties with a positive mindset. We have talked about “making a difference” in our School Assembly and Chapel Service this week. I hope our pupils share the stories with you at home and talk about how they too could show leadership and make a difference.

Congratulations to 7NG who lead our assembly today with a very polished performance from all pupils encouraging us to “get into drama now”.

Our Activity Charity Break hosted by Bears, Jaguars and Lions was a highlight of today with activities such as ‘pin the horn on the unicorn’, ‘name the bear’, ‘hoopla, ‘how many lollies’ and ‘football shooting’. The total raised for our elected school charity ‘British Heart Foundation’ was £262.16. Thank you for your support.

We also look forward to the Bears, Jaguars and Lions Evensong next week where our charity reps will update us on what is being done to support the charity. There will also be a guest speaker from the British Heart Foundation.

Finally, please encourage family and friends to join us for a night to remember at the WPSA 'Night at the Races' on the new date of Friday 10th March. For more details click here.

Positive Parents Programme
The final session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘Mental health awareness - the signs - what to do and what not to do’ and will be held on Wednesday, 1st March (a change to the advertised date of 27th Feb). The session will commence at 7.30pm in the Pod. Please email Gemma Saunders gls@wellingboroughschool.org to book a place.

Year 5 bCyberwise
This week Pamela Jennings from Life Education came into the Prep School to talk to our Year 5 pupils about staying safe online.  Pamela spent an hour with each Year 5 class and showed them videos, allowed them to take part in role play and discussions around the subject of e-Safety.  Our Year 5 Life Skills programme also supports this theme throughout the year and we will be reinforcing the key messages across the curriculum.

Online Safety
It has been reported to us by colleagues in a neighbouring school about inappropriate behaviour online towards students using the App 'Musical.ly'. The App is designed to allow the user to create music videos. Female pupils have been ‘followed’ online by an individual who initially follows them, starts “liking” what they post and then initiates conversation. Very quickly the conversation progresses from ‘Hi, you’re cute’ to requesting that the conversation moves privately to the Oovoo App. This site is widely used by paedophiles. Conversations on 'Musical.ly' have rapidly moved to requests for live chat or uploads of highly inappropriate images of the student. Please take time to talk to your child about this site, reiterate the online safety message and that the behaviour mentioned in this letter is clearly grooming.  Statistics show that online grooming takes only 20 minutes before a young person is taken in by the perpetrator. If your child has been contacted in this manner, we advise that you keep any evidence on the phone and contact the Police on 101.  Your child should not have any further contact with anyone behaving in this manner.

This week, pupils from each year group have been involved in group interviews with the teachers where they have had the opportunity to give their opinions about our curriculum and their lessons. They were also able to talk about their favourite aspects of lessons and give suggestions for changes that could be made. It was super to see the 'Pupil Voice' being put across confidently and positively by the children.  Here is a sample of some of the other highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from Dr Fordham, Mrs Drye, Keith Hargreaves and Reverend Walker.

Year 5 Kew Gardens - Tuesday 7th February
A reminder for Year 5 parents that next Tuesday (7th February), Year 5 pupils will be visiting Kew Gardens, as part of their Geography curriculum on Ecosystems and Climate Zones. Pupils should arrive at school by 7:45am (please note the earlier start to the normal school day) and should wear their school tracksuits. Pupils should also have warm and waterproof outer layers with them too, as it may be cold and/or wet, in addition to it being tropical and hot! We aim to arrive back in school by 5pm, although I will keep you informed by clarion call, should we have any issues with traffic. A packed lunch will be provided by the school, but pupils should bring with them some writing equipment, as they will be doing academic work on the trip. Students are allowed to bring up to £5 in spending money, should they wish to purchase a souvenir.

Discovering Collective Nouns
During two English lessons,  5FD were definitely Finding Humour and happily Working Interdependently whilst enthusiastically participating in their Collective Nouns Competition. Divided into four groups, they competed in a race to discover collective nouns, through independent internet searches on four topic areas: Animals; Birds; Fish, Reptiles and Insects; and People, Plants and Miscellaneous. They used ICT skills to create PowerPoints with which to illustrate the meanings of the words they had found. They selected images, for instance of salamanders, and labelled them correctly (a congress/a maelstrom!). Every now and then, Mrs Drye shouted, “Lucky Dip!” and four runners shot to the silver trophy, in which a selection of assorted lesser known collective nouns acted as a treasure trove. Favourites were an obstinacy of buffaloes, a wake of vultures, a chain of bobolinks (let’s face it, we just liked saying “Bobolinks” and they are charming!) and an ostentation of peacocks. There were interesting questions too: “Do pearls go under People, Molluscs or Miscellaneous?” That seemed to tick the Band 5 Progress Skill “You ask questions to help you use what you know (e.g. 'If "terrier" is a common noun, why is "Alsatian" a proper noun?').” After all, people wear a string of pearls, oysters make the pearls, but pearls are jewellery. Gosh, our language is fascinating!

Macabre Tales Thrilled Parents and Pupils
Rupert Mason, from Redheart Theatre, kept Year 7 on the edge of their seats. He also captivated several parents, who thoroughly enjoyed the three Gothic tales he enacted so superbly and were most complementary about his dramatic monologue and the level of literature the children were being taught. The sound of eerie winds, heartbeats and creaking doors helped add to the tension and suspense conjured by darkness, candlelight, a skull, red drapes, firelight and shadows. Mr Mason vividly brought several characters to life with deft use of the actor’s craft: the tilt of a head, a withered arm, nervous blinking, clothing in mad disarray and accents galore. We heard stories about fear, the supernatural and insanity, by Edgar Allan Poe, Dickens and H.G. Wells. For 55 minutes he mesmerised his audience, made them jump and gave pupils the opportunity to thoroughly appreciate that most ancient of communication skills – the art of the storyteller. What a super way to augment the pupils’ study of short stories the previous term.

Mason’s Masterfully Moving Monologue
Rupert Mason also gave a magnificently moving performance of ‘Mr Owen’s Pocketbook’ (written and directed by the award winning Justin Butcher). During one period, he took his Year 8 audience (and attending parents) from Shropshire to Flanders, from Merseyside to Edinburgh’s Craiglockhart Mental Hospital, from the horrors of the trenches to the dismay of parents’ receiving the news of their son’s death. Cleverly intertwining the lives of numerous poets, as diverse as Tennyson and Sassoon, he began with the discovery of Wilfred Owen’s pocketbook amongst the dead hero’s personal effects, through which he drew a vivid picture of that poet’s life and work, his mentors and muses, but also of all soldiers in WW1. Through the powerful conviction of Mr Mason’s performance, we empathised with those suffering cruelly from exposure, saw the panic of a gas attack and charged down the “valley of death” with the 600. Through the eyes of an officer writing to Owen’s mother, the differing views of the ‘reality’ of war were made starkly clear. There were tales of wild heroism juxtaposed with bleak dismay yet, ultimately, of the deep love Owen felt for his comrades and of the voice he had found as a “poets’ poet”, which speaks to us all down the generations. It was a superb conclusion to the pupils’ English studies on the literature of war.

Treasure of a Performance
A rip roaring pirate classic tore through the Prep School Hall this week, in much the same way that illness tore through the cast! Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic was fired from the cannon of Year 8 and landed with a burst of “Yo ho ho’s!” and several bottles of rum. “The one legged man” stumped around the Hall seeking treasure and fortune whilst  his crew of rascally pirates sought to rob the noble Lady Trelawney and her butterfly loving friend Miss Livesey. This was a riotous production, a complete company effort with multiple lines coming thick and fast from a well drilled cast. So well drilled in fact that, when illness struck four of the cast, parts were redistributed and did not in any way slow the show down - a magnificent feat! Add to that the fact that it was a different four students over two performances and you really get a sense of what an achievement it was. The highlights were numerous, too many to list but … a galleon in the Prep Hall, Long John’s leg , Captain Flint, Benn Gunn’s love of cheese, the real treasure, the fight, Jim in the apple barrel, the square dance …I could go on. Well done to the entire cast. A fantastic production performed with brio and vigour!

Year 7 RS Trip
The Year 7 pupils travelled to Bhaktivedanta Manor, the UK headquarters of the Hare Krishna movement, near Watford and the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Bedford on Tuesday, 31st January. Head-scarves were packed and offerings of fruit and vegetables for the sacred herd of cows were loaded onto the coach that took Year 7 southwards to explore the sights, sounds, tastes and scents of Hinduism and Sikhism. The steady drizzle failed to dampen either their curiosity or the warmth of the welcome we received in both venues. Our pupils elicited appreciation from our hosts by their intelligent interest and commendable behaviour.

Here are some of the highlights of the visits, as recorded by two of our pupils:

  • "My favourite moment visiting Bhaktivedanta Manor was eating the vegetarian lunch because it was delicious, even though it didn’t look it. I only know how good it was because I tried it all (and ate it all.) I also enjoyed dressing up. I learned the correct method of feeding cows, that Hindus think of a cow like their mother and that young Vaishnavite Hindus feel protected by Narasimha who is half man half lion, who killed a man who was trying to kill his own son, so he had to do what was right to protect the young boy. I now want to find out some examples of different branches of Hinduism."
  • "The thing I enjoyed most about the Gurdwara was finding out some facts about the ten gurus: the word guru means ‘teacher’. Three things that I didn’t know about the Gurdwara was that the Guru Granth Sahib takes two days to read, but the reader ‘granthi’ takes a break after every two hours. The book has over one thousand pages, and is kept like a human so it gets put to bed. What I would like to find out about the Gurdwara is how do you become a granthi."

This week, we were delighted to welcome seven of our School Governors to the Prep School. They started the day with Hymn Practice witnessing the marvellous flexibility of our music staff during a power cut swapping from the organ to the piano and keeping us lala’ing throughout. They then spent some time going on a Learning Walk around the school visiting four classes of different age and ability groups. Our focus of the walks was to focus on the theme of Pupil Engagement between both class and teacher, and pupil to pupil which was a very worthwhile activity. Listening to Will Mabbit, a visiting author was then followed by a Q&A with our pupils. Their feedback was glowing:

The whole morning was a really worthwhile and enjoyable experience. Special thanks to those members of staff and pupils who allowed us to join them for a few steps on our Learning Walks. To those pupils who kindly attended the interviews, our thanks for their thoughtful questions and answers. And to ALL pupils for their politeness and smiling faces which certainly enhanced our visit.”

We come to the end of a very busy half term. I would like to wish you all a most enjoyable, relaxing week of rest. Time to have a haircut, polish shoes, smarten our blazers, read a book, play outside and get ready for another action packed half term of learning!

The Scholastic Book Fair is on its way!
Calling all parents!
The Library will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair just after half term, from Thursday 23rd February to the Friday 1st March. Bringing a great selection of the very best books to inspire and entertain young readers and earn free books and resources for your school. The fair will be open during morning, lunchtime and afternoon breaks for pupils to come and browse and buy.  Please have a look at the catalogue that your child will be bringing home with them, this will be a good way of selecting the books your child may want to purchase at the book fair. During the book fair you can pay by phone. Please ask for details from Mr Medhurst.

Here is a sample of some of the highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from Dr Fordham and Mrs Drye:

Year 5 Trip to Kew Gardens
On Tuesday 7th February Year 5 pupils visited Kew Gardens as part of their Geography curriculum on Climate Zones and Ecosystems. Pupils experienced a guided tour of the Palm House, replicating a Tropical Rainforest environment. They were able to learn about the types of plants and how they are adapted to life in the rainforest. Thankfully, the weather was fine and dry (albeit rather cold) and there was no sign of the rain from the morning. In addition to the guided tour, pupils also visited a range of different climate zones, to experience different plants in the Princess of Wales Conservatory (ranging from the tropical desert to carnivorous plants found in cooler climates). Our trip coincided with the Orchid Festival, so there were fantastic displays of a whole range of different orchids. Many thanks to all staff who attended the trip, and to Mr Batley and Mr Knox as volunteers. An enjoyable and educational visit to support this Year 5 Geography module.

Author Enthused Piratical Pupils
The English department invited writer Will Mabbitt to talk to Years 4, 5 and 6 (plus visiting Governors, who had to make a reluctant exit half way through) about his books and the creative process of committing ideas to paper, creating characters (like Omynus Hussh) and the narrative arc. He made us all swear an increasingly amusing Pirate Oath (cunningly incorporating copyright), before helping us explore his character via our observational skills; this was a great lesson in how to portray personality through describing personal possessions: coffee mugs, Marmite jars, piles of reference texts, a laptop, highlighters, a Blu-tack bone, a camera, a dead pot plant, a fox mask and a self-congratulatory Oscar etc. Next, he chose members of the audience as bodies and invited us to give them personality traits which they then had to portray: we ended up with a cowardly lion, a brave and intelligent bear, a “cool” panda, a timorous tiger and a drunken hedgehog. As they journeyed towards the treasure, pupils also had to invent suitably gruesome deaths for each of the motley crew in turn, until only one survived. Children are delightfully inventive about such matters! During this journey, he also dropped little pearls of wisdom into the entertainment which fitted perfectly with our Habits of Mind: Taking Responsible Risks, Finding Humour, Striving for Accuracy (how vital the skills of an Editor are!) and Persistence.  Believe in yourself. Be observant, and listen to everything that is going on around you because the best stories are always rooted in reality. Never let an idea escape you; Post-it notes make an invaluable memory aid when you’re in a hurry. What a lovely way to spend an English lesson. (All the books have been purchased; he will complete the signing next week, so pupils will be issued with them after half term).

Funky Foods
This week our Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils experienced a showcase of fruit and vegetables from one of Chartwells most experienced chefs.  The pupils were thoroughly engaged for an hour, learning about the nutritional elements of different vegetables and understanding how the different colours of vegetables affected our health and diet.  Purple vegetables for example help to lower blood pressure! Thank you to Mrs O'Sullivan our catering manager for organising this for our junior pupils.

Charity Update
Our running total from fundraising events now stands at £1,615.78. A huge thank you to all parents and pupils who support the activities organised for the School’s charity ‘British Heart Foundation’.

Chapel
This week's Chapel was presented by Steve Hill, our Chaplaincy Youth Worker. He challenged Prep School pupils to think about the challenges of growing up in a "post-truth" society where people appear to be guided in their decisions by their feelings, stirred by sensationalist media, rather than by an understanding of facts and truths. Steve encouraged all pupils to develop a thirst for truth and to learn how to distinguish between people who are genuinely concerned to do good and people who might be trying to win their attention and support for less than wholesome causes.

Charity Day
Crazy Hair Day today was a huge success and the children have come up with all kinds of wacky ideas from pipe cleaners to bird cages and carefully balanced coke bottles! Even the staff got involved and have been sporting ribbons and balloons in their hair. We have managed to raise a total of £452.80 for Phab Kids, a charity which provides residential trips for mentally and physically disabled children. These camps make a real difference to the children, and also their families who are dealing with disability on a daily basis. Mrs McDougall is extremely grateful to everyone for fully embracing the day and making a staggering amount of money. It is now only 11 weeks until the London Marathon!

Positive Parents Programme
The final session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘Mental health awareness - the signs - what to do and what not to do’ and will be held on Wednesday, 1st March (a change to the advertised date of 27th February). It has been super seeing the pupils energised and excited to be back at school this week. The week has flown by (literally with Storm Doris on Thursday!). We began on Monday with a school assembly where I talked to the pupils about the value of education, not taking school for granted and making the most of every opportunity. I reminded them of Malala Yousafsai, heralded by many as the "the most famous teenager in the world". I shared her story and parts of the speech she gave to the United Nations Youth Assembly to demonstrate the power of one voice to change the world. This young woman has taught us about forgiveness, not taking anything for granted and that there is no age to stand up for injustice and for what we believe is right. I am leading a project as part of the Prep School Development Plan to look at community service and service learning opportunities to help our Prep pupils make a positive difference to their community.

WPSA ‘Night at the Races’
Don’t forget to buy your tickets for our exciting WPSA ‘Night at the Races’ on Friday 10th March in the Prep School Hall. Tickets are £5 per person and are available from the Prep Office. Click here for further information. I would like to warmly encourage our new families to join us. It will be a great opportunity to spend some time with friends and get to know some new people. We look forward to seeing you there.

WPSA Fund Matching
As the WPSA continue to raise funds to support the development of some major Prep School projects, they are looking for parents who work for businesses who are able to offer 'fund matching' for some of the events.  However small the contribution it will inevitably help to achieve the targets. Please contact Emma Redfern, WPSA Chair, via email at wpsa@wellingboroughschool.org.

Windows into Learning
The Year 4 Windows into Learning event next Wednesday gives us the opportunity to share how English is taught to this age group and for parents to sit alongside their children and complete some work together. Please do come along if you are able. A copy of the presentation will be available if you are unable to make the session. Please contact Mrs Simmons - as@wellingboroughschool.org.

7AJS Assembly
Well done to 7AJS for their super assembly this morning which focused on the fact that every single one of us is special and unique and we need to celebrate our differences.

Finally…
Good luck to all our coders who are participating in the Coding Workshop tomorrow where pupils can choose from a variety of activities from building an app, a computer game or a website. I, myself, am looking forward to building my first robot!

This half term we are continuing with our focus on Managing Impulsivity as the chosen Habit of Mind so the deadline for the poster competition has been extended to 31st March.  In addition, you may have noticed our new Habits of Mind noticeboard in the top playground where the first two posters on Persisting and Taking Responsible Risks are displayed. Congratulations once again to the pupils who submitted the winning designs.  I would encourage everyone to go and have a look at them.

The Scholastic Book Fair
The Library is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair, which commenced this week on Thursday. The fair will run until Tuesday 28th February and there will be a great selection of the very best books to inspire and entertain young readers and earn free books and resources for the School. The fair will be open during morning, lunchtime and afternoon breaks for pupils to come and browse and buy. Parents are welcome to come and browse after school on Tuesday, 28th February from 4.10pm-5.00pm. Payment for books can be made by telephone. If you have any questions please contact Andrew Medhurst, Librarian arm@wellingboorughschool.org.

Invitation to attend a talk from visiting Speaker
Mr Hargreaves is hosting a speaker on Wednesday 15th March at 18.00 in The Pod. The event is open to all students and parents, is free of charge and promises to be extraordinary. The speaker is Andrew Tatham whose book, 'A Group Photograph' has been the central exhibit at the Flanders Field Museum in Ypres for the past year. It is an exploration of the lives of all the members of one regimental photograph taken at the beginning of the Great War. This exploration is through both intimate research and artistic expression. The talk will last approximately an hour and a half with questions at the end. This is absolutely brilliant preparation for Year 9 history work. For more information click here.

Chapel
In Chapel this week we started thinking about "The Big Question - What is Truth?" and started by thinking about the fact that people cannot start to answer the question until they can agree which type of language they will use to discuss the different sorts of truths that exist. This week we thought about the fact that 10 + 10 = 20 in base 10, but that in base 2, (binary language) 10 + 10 = 100. In the coming weeks we shall be reflecting on other types of truths and the languages we need to use to understand them.

Here is a sample of some of the highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from Mrs McDougall and Miss Kingstone:

Year 4
Excitement is building in Year 4 ahead of this year’s musical production of Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits. Lines have been learnt, costumes are being made and dances choreographed. The children are all enjoying the experience and very much looking forward to performing it in a few weeks’ time. To complement the busy rehearsal schedule the children are learning how to compose and write play scripts in their English lessons. 4CM have been working on a 'cops and robbers' style setting with everyone writing their own scene which they will show case to the class next week.

Year 5
On Tuesday, Year 5 experienced a very different style of schooling. No longer were they in the modern and well lit classrooms of today. The hall was transformed into a Victorian classroom, lit by a single candle on the teacher's desk and any light that managed to seep through the high windows. Row upon row of tables greeted them as they entered the room - boys to one side, girls to the other. Slates and slate pencils, ink pens and ink pots the only equipment available for use. And so it began... repeat this, learn this, write this, recite this... over and over again and woe betide if you forgot something you had been told! Dunce hats for the dim, finger stocks for the fiddlers and back straighteners for those that slouched all became part of their lessons, not forgetting the never ending threat of the dreaded cane! It was a relief for the children when lunchtime came and they were released early to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee! An afternoon of detective work ensued as the children practiced their historical source work skills to solve the suitcase mysteries. They also enjoyed handling artefacts and working out what the objects were and making their own nib pen, blotter and handwriting books to practise with at home. Thank you to the parents who offered their help during the afternoon session. It was definitely a day that won't be forgotten for a while!

Please email Gemma Saunders gls@wellingboroughschool.org to book your place.

Year 7 Buddy Scheme
The ‘Buddy Scheme’ has started where our Year 7 pupils have been able to work with the children in the Pre-Prep. This has already proven to be a positive experience for them and they have been so keen to go down to Pre-Prep on their allotted time, and are returning with great excitement and enjoyment on their faces. What a great opportunity for the pupils to work with children in the Pre-Prep, by supporting them in the classroom with their reading and writing and also in the playground by playing and talking with them.

Girls' Games Provision – Summer Sports
I would like to take this opportunity to inform all parents and pupils of the changes being made to the games provision for the summer term. As you may or may not be aware the GCSE PE curriculum has changed over the past few months and rounders have been removed. There is currently no pathway for rounders throughout the UK. The Prep School has now made a decision to remove rounders from its games curriculum and instead replace it with Girls’ Cricket. I am very pleased to inform you that we have managed to get block fixtures throughout the summer term with most weeks every girl having the opportunity to play and represent the School. Girls’ cricket will be played every Wednesday afternoon and during their games lesson on either a Monday or a Friday. Regarding clothing and equipment; the girls will still be required to play in their current summer games kit and no additional equipment will be required. Alongside girls’ cricket we will run girls’ tennis and have increased the number of fixtures this year. We have also entered a few tournaments and will look to build our provision and give as many girls an opportunity to play and represent the School. Tennis will take place after school as a club and matches played on a Thursday (after school) or Saturday morning.  Many thanks and we look forward to receiving your continued support throughout the summer term.

I would just like to take the opportunity to say big congratulations to all the pupils who competed at the IAPS Sswimming Gala before half term at Kimbolton School. We have now been forwarded the results and times from the gala – to view click here. We are still awaiting confirmation from IAPS to see if any swimmers have qualified for the finals day. Once we have this information we will publish them via the School noticeboard and newsletter. IAPS have informed us that this will be a lengthy process so I ask for your patience in this matter. I am told it takes around 3-4 weeks to turn this information around and get it out to all the schools.

Milton Keynes Theatre Project
May I draw your attention to a wonderful opportunity taking place at Milton Keynes Theatre. It is a two week intensive project designed to give young people an insight into life as a professional musical theatre performer. They will work alongside a creative team from within the industry, a professional set and a live orchestra - culminating in three performances on stage at Milton Keynes Theatre. The project runs during the school holidays from 24th July to 5thAugust. There are 100 places for students aged between 10 (school Year 5) and 21. Auditions for the project will take place on Tuesday 11th April at 10am, with recalls for principal roles being held the following day Wednesday 12th April. This is nothing to do with Wellingborough Prep School but as Head of Drama I would endorse this as a tremendous opportunity. Please be aware that it is fee paying. For more information click here.

What a fabulous day yesterday was as we celebrated the world of books together. I applaud the imaginative and creative way in which characters were brought to life. The parade in the morning was a real highlight. Congratulations to all. A day like yesterday gives us the opportunity to reflect on how fortunate we are to take delight in the pleasure of reading. At Prep School age, children begin a lifelong relationship with the printed word and, with your and our help, grow into adults who can read easily and frequently. I, dressed as Calamity Jane, especially enjoyed hearing Year 4 pupils take delight in sharing their well-presented book reviews with me. Another thing that caught my imagination was the ‘6 Word Book Challenge’ set by Mr Medhurst our librarian.

Here are a few submissions:

  1. Once upon a time….. the end
  2. Suddenly, I fell, the room darkened.
  3. Crunch. “The biscuits are poisoned Dad!”
  4. I saw his teeth and ran…

If you would like to join the competition, send your entries to prep-office@wellingboroughschool.org.

Open Day
Tomorrow, we open our doors to prospective families to visit our School. Our visitors will be able to see first-hand the types of activities our pupils are engaged in every day. Please encourage friends and families who you think might be interested.

WPSA Night at the Races - Cancelled
It is with regret that the WPSA committee has decided to cancel the Race Night on the 10th March. One of the purposes of the WPSA is to arrange events which contribute socially to the School Community as well as to raise funds that advance the education of the pupils of the School. They are keen to hear from you about the type of events you would like them to organise. Whether they are parent social events or activities at the weekend for the children or adult and children combined events. If you have any suggestions, please email the Chair, Emma Redfern, at WPSA@wellingboroughschool.org.

Finally…
Congratulations to all Prep School pupils who performed in the Rock, Pop and Blues Concert last week. It was simply marvellous watching youngsters from Year 4 upwards creating and performing magical music together. Also well done to 6JP for their assembly this morning.

Have a restful weekend.

Mrs Sue Knox

Chapel
Chapel this week happened early on Wednesday to make way for World Book Day on Thursday. In the spirit of that event, we explored the idea that fiction may not be historically or scientifically true, but if we understand its imaginative language we will find that it communicates truth in its own way, according to its way of using language. We thought in particular about how a book like "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" can communicate different types of truth, once its language is "decoded."

Here is a sample of some of the highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from Miss Kingstone,

Anglo-Saxon Day
Year 4 enjoyed stepping back in time on Monday as the hall was transformed into an Anglo-Saxon village. The children got into the spirit of the day by dressing in suitable costume. During the morning they enjoyed many Anglo-Saxon crafts such as making clay pots, ink, illuminated lettering, candles and runes. Some children also paid a visit to the medicine man and made dinner for the villagers. Shields and bows provided an opportunity to learn how to fight for King Alfred's army and create a shield wall which was enjoyed by all. In the afternoon the children enjoyed practising their historical identification skills during an archaeological dig but the highlight was the making of pewter necklaces from the moulds created by some of the children. Thank you to the parents who assisted us during the day - your help is always gratefully received.

Windows into Learning: Year 4 English
On Wednesday 16 Year 4 parents joined us to work with their children on some English activities in the library.  The afternoon started with a short presentation showing a curriculum summary; the assessment process and how active learning or cross curricular links are used to engage the children and give purpose to their writing. Later, comprehension, spelling and spag.com were amongst the activities on offer. It was a really super afternoon, with the pupils thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to work with their parents in a relaxed environment. Thank you to all those who attended making it so worthwhile, as well as encouraging and supporting your children in their learning at school. For those not able to attend please click here to view the PowerPoint presentation.

Affirming Children
It is easier to build up a child than repair an adult. Choose your words wisely! How?

  1. I think you’re awesome!
  2. You did a great job!
  3. You make me smile.
  4. That was a really kind thing to do.
  5. Well done for working so hard!
  6. I love being your (parent, grandparent, aunt etc)
  7. I saw you being kind to your little brother/sister
  8. I believe in you.
  9. I am so proud of your achievements in…art/drama/sport etc
  10. You can do it!

Affirming words from Mums and Dads are like light switches.  Speak a word of affirmation at the right moment in a child’s life and it’s like lighting up a whole roomful of possibilities.

Pupil Achievements
Special mention to Toby Heath who has received a ‘Blue Peter Badge’ for amazing fundraising.

British Values
As a school, we share an important role in educating children about fundamental ‘British Values’ such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. These values are embedded in many areas of our curriculum and delivered through Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural initiatives and programmes. On Monday in Form time, we discussed how these values were represented in our School. I enjoyed listening to the discussion as the pupils came up with their views on how we embody these such as: we show care and kindness towards others, we listen to others and learn about different beliefs, we are represented on the School Council and we elect our Councillors, we vote for our School Charity, we follow our code of conduct and understand the rewards and sanctions in the School. 5FD delivered an excellent assembly this morning bringing these values to life in an engaging and informative way. Well done to Mrs Drye and 5FD.

Spring Concert
Good luck to all musicians and performers for the Spring Concert next week. It has been lovely, as the weather is getting warmer, to open the classroom windows and hear the beautiful music drifting from the Music Block. Well done also to the performers who have participated in the Rotary Music Festival. Another great performance.

Open Morning
Thank you to everyone who visited and supported our Open Morning last Saturday. It turned out to be a fine day and we enjoyed showing off the School to parents and pupils. One overriding comment was how confident and gracious the Prep Tour guides were. As one father commented:

“if my child could speak as confidently and respectfully as your pupils do, I will be a very proud Dad”.

I am indeed a very proud Headmistress!

4Ma1 have been trialling a new times tables game this week. TT Rockstars  Sulaiman Ali has already achieved Rock Legend status averaging a rock speed time of 1.83 seconds per question. Finn Davern is a ‘Rock Star’ with an average rock speed time of 2.36 per question. Well done to the whole class who have improved their speed of recall of mixed times tables. The Top 5 this week are:

1st - Sulaiman Ali
2nd - Finn Davern
3rd - Thomas Docker
4th - Angus McDougall
5th - William Church

Year 4 Play
The Year 4 rehearsals are well under way. Here is a hint of things to come: sheiks, bandits, genies, a Sultan and a royal ruby. Add in a scattering of songs, witty puns, fun and laughter; it is a show not to be missed! The performances for parents are next Wednesday 15th March and Thursday 16th March at 3pm prompt. No tickets required.

Peer Survey Update
The ABAs have discussed the results of the peer survey and the overview will be placed on the ABA board in the coming days. The ABAs continue to work on supporting our students and have also been busy planning for this year’s Police County Schools Challenge. Thank you to all the pupils who participated in the survey and took the time to contribute.

British Heart Foundation – Jump Rope Competition
Pupils have been invited to take part in a sponsored skipping event to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. All pupils who take part will receive a certificate and any child who raises over £50 will also receive a digital skipping rope. 20% of the money raised will be put towards the School fund for new playground equipment.

Healthy Eating and Allergy Awareness
We are a ‘Healthy Eating’ and ‘Allergy Aware’ site. Pupils are welcome to bring in healthy snacks for their breaks, for example fruit, vegetables or health bars. We request that foods containing any form of nut are not brought onto the school premises. We recognise the importance of drinking water throughout the day. We have a number of water fountains in various parts of the site for pupils to use. Pupils are encouraged to bring water into the school in clear plastic bottles. These bottles may be brought into the classroom or out onto the games fields. They can be refilled as necessary from the water fountains.

Spring Concert - Arrangements and Rehearsals
The following Prep School groups will be performing at the Spring Concert on Tuesday 14th March: Brass Group, Clarinet Group, Flute & Recorder Group, Guitar Group, Orchestra, Percussion Group, String Quartet and the String Group. Prep School performers should report to the Stage Door (around the back of the theatre) between 6.30pm and 6.40pm, where they will be registered. Performers should wear School uniform, with no jumpers, and appearance should be as smart as possible. Rehearsals will be held at the Castle Theatre on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th March during the school day. The rehearsal schedule has been emailed to parents of performers, and a copy is also displayed in the Music department and in the playground. Pupils should meet promptly in the Recital Room at their allotted rehearsal time. From there, they will be escorted by staff across to the theatre. It is vital that pupils remember to bring their instrument and music to School on rehearsal days. Tickets for the concert are £5 for adults and free for concessions, but they must be obtained from the Castle Theatre box office, either online or by phone (01933 270007). Tickets are not required for performers.

Music Achievements
Libby Hawkins
(Y8) performed at the Derngate Theatre twice this week.  Once for the Orchestra Spectacular and once in the supporting band for the Northamptonshire Big Sing (with 500 primary school children).  Lots of the primary school children were intrigued by Libby's viola!

Chapel
In Chapel this week, Steve, our Chaplaincy Youth Worker, asked us to think about why it is important to use a time such as Lent to take the opportunity to reflect on where we are heading in life, and where we want to be heading (which aren't necessarily the same!), and what we need to do to change course. In this context he explained to pupils how they can use the "Space for Lent" in the Chapel chancel next week, so that they can benefit from its reflections and stimuli to personal thoughts and resolutions.

What a treat this week with the Year 4 play! Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits did not disappoint as we sang and laughed our way through the show. For me, the pure enjoyment and joy on the pupils’ faces was priceless. I commend them all and also their fabulous and hardworking teachers. A show like that takes considerable work and the result was certainly superb. I also would like to commend the performers in the Spring Concert this week. Again, a superb showcase of the outstanding abilities of the Wellingborough pupils. We look forward to welcoming our Year 8 pupils back later this afternoon from their Geography Field Trip. They have had superb weather in Dorset and have been busy improving their skills and knowledge. Good luck to our U10A, U11A and U13A teams competing in the Rugby National Schools Rugby Finals at Epsom on Sunday. You can get immediate results by following us on Twitter @WboroPrepSchool.

Summer Ball
The ‘Friends of Wellingborough School’ invite you to the Family of Schools Summer Ball to be held on the school grounds on Saturday, 1st July 2017. Tickets are now on sale. For more information click here.

Lockdown Exercise
As part of our emergency event planning, we will be holding a Major Incident Exercise on Friday 24th March between 9.15am and 10.00am. Unlike the Fire Drills to which our pupils are accustomed and perform so efficiently, this exercise helps us practise our lock-down procedures – rather than simply evacuation. We held an assembly last week to let pupils know what to expect which we will again talk about in our assembly on Monday. A letter has been sent by clarion to all parents from Mr Bowe.

Mrs Sue Knox
Headmistress

This week has been a very busy one across many areas of the curriculum.  Here is a sample of some of the highlights of the Prep School's curriculum from this week including reports from James Denton, Mrs Staughton, Mrs Rowley-Burns, Miss Machin and Mr Dennis.

Bloodhound Model Rocket Car Challenge
I found out about the competition at Goodwood Festival of speed 2016, then I passed it through to Mr Whitby. During DT club we started building the cars out of foam, my car had a point at the front and had straight lines in between the areas where you can’t cut. After the point the sides are straight a few millimetres from the area when you can’t cut. Tuesday 7th March 2017, race day. On race day we arrived at Sir Christopher Hatton School at around quarter past one. We moved to the track just in time to see another school finish their runs. Unfortunately they only had enough rockets for one run per car. My car went first and did ok. When it was Jamie's turn to run his car flipped over and crashed! Overall, we did not get through to the first round but are keen to try again next year. By James Denton (Y8)

Science Week
This week is National Science and Engineering week and so in recognition of this each pupil will have the opportunity to do an activity that is not normally part of our curriculum.

As Year 4 are busy with their play, next week they will have a trip up to the lab, where they will learn how to light Bunsen burners and then make sparklers to burn!

Year 5 have further investigated a concept explained to them at the recent Funky Food talk from Chartwells. They have made red cabbage indicators and investigated the effects of acid and alkali substances on their indicator. This knowledge was then used to make a rainbow fish, using the different colours to make patterns.

Year 6 became food scientists for a lesson and developed their own choice of flavoured yogurt. They had to use precise measuring and weighing skills to obtain the correct ratio of flavouring to yogurt. It certainly took longer to make than to eat!

Year 7 have covered small snippets of DNA in their curriculum lessons this year but had the opportunity to find out a lot more this week. This included a brief history of its discovery, structure and making a model of it. They also extracted some DNA from a strawberry.

Year 8 were given the equipment and instructions to make a 3D dome. To successfully complete the task the pupils had to read the instructions carefully and work as a team. Some did better than others! They also completed a quiz to research the names and locations of famous dome shaped buildings around the world.

Many thanks to the science staff and technicians for their support in preparing, delivering and clearing up these sessions!

Word Pi Day
Last Tuesday was world Pi Day, the reason being of course is that 3.14 and 14th March (in America at least) are represented as the 14th day of the 3rd month. Also the children discovered that 3.14 backwards makes a fairly reasonable spelling of the word PIE – a coincidence? During the day all maths sets in all year groups found out about Pi - what it is and what it represents. Additionally Year 5 made loom band bracelets so that the colours of the bands reflected the sequence of the numbers in Pi. Year 6 had the task of following the pattern so that they wrote a story starting with a 3 letter word, then a 1 letter word followed by a 4 letter word and so on. Years 7 & 8 had two tasks. Firstly they had to solve “dingbats” which all had Pi/pie in their answer, they then had the difficult task of memorizing Pi to as many digits as possible. One Year 8 group got to 54 with only about 10 minutes to achieve the task! Both pupils and staff were delighted that even our lunches followed the theme of the day with cottage pie and apple pie on the menu!

Onatti Theatre Visit for Years 4, 5 and 6
On Tuesday, younger pupils and some parents enjoyed a complete change of scene as Period 3 was exchanged for a visit from Onatti, who perform plays to allow pupils to experience the French language in context. Following the story of a lost tourist trekking along a French beach, the play allowed for all sorts of strange encounters. Plenty of audience participation (in a surfing lesson, a beach closure for a presidential visit and a case of mistaken identity) saw the pupils actively involved in their learning, and the visiting actors commented on how engaged the pupils were. Thanks to Niall Mahon, who wrote a short review: "It was very funny and they did very well with only two people! I could happily watch it all day."

Year 4 Play
This week Year 4 have been performing the musical extravaganza - Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits. All the children had a speaking part including the evil Vizier and his cute monkeys, Bongo and his band of enthusiastic bandits, Ali Baba with his side kick Flossy and a sprinkle of sparkle from the genius Genies. The Year 4 corridor has been a hive of singing, dancing and acting for the last few weeks and the children's dedication to the play has been fantastic. The children sang and performed their hearts out and the sheer joy on their faces was wonderful to see.  A big thank you to all those who have been involved.

History Competition
‘My EPIC Era’ is a history competition run by historian, Kevin Hicks where entrants are asked to name their favourite era in history and tell us all about it – they can write about it, draw it, make it – they can even sing or film it.  For more information click here.

Focus Groups
Gemma Saunders has continued to meet with a randomly selected group of pupils both juniors and seniors over the last few weeks about their views on school.  The pupils have been very open and honest and we already have a great deal of feedback which we are going to present to staff during our INSET training next term.  Thank you to all pupils who have participated in this project.

Your Child's Online World
I often present links in the newsletter around the topic of internet safety and it is a topic we could all learn more about, both as adults and children.  I am delighted that Gemma Saunders is going to be leading a presentation to pupils and parents next term and I hope that it will informative and eye opening for both. More details to follow next term.

School Council and Charity Committee
We are very much looking forward to our Pupil Feedback assembly on Monday morning.  At WPS we take pupil voice very seriously and the School Council and Charity Committee will feedback to the school about their work during this term.  A full report will be in next week’s newsletter.

Girls Games Provision – Summer Sports
