This week, Year 7 heard from Year 8 pupils and teachers about the leadership opportunities in the Prep School as they begin to prepare themselves for next year. This afforded me with the opportunity on Monday to address the Prep School on the role of leadership. Leadership comes in many forms and guises but what is at the core is the ability to step up and take responsibility. Leadership is about taking ourselves and others to a better place. For pupils to stand up for what they believe is right, to be wise and caring. When they see a friend who needs help or is sad, when someone asks their advice, when they work hard to achieve what they dream of. It takes real courage to be a leader. I look forward to the term ahead celebrating the excellent leadership of our Year 8 pupils who have been exemplary role models for our younger pupils.

I shared one of my favourite stories about Ryan Hreljac. A boy who, aged 7, raised money to build a well for a village in Africa.  Since then, Ryan has started a charity called Ryan’s Well and has completed 500 projects bringing access to clean water and sanitation to over 750,000 people in 16 developing countries. An awe-inspiring story. “It only takes one person to start something greater than us all”. For more details click here.

Thank you for your feedback on our new Curriculum Newsletters. These have been very well received and the format and content appreciated. These will be sent out on a termly basis and then uploaded onto our website.  I wish Bon Voyage to our Year 4 pupils and staff, ably led by Miss Kingstone, next week who head off to Hilltop in Norfolk on their residential trip.  It is an exciting time for our younger pupils and I look forward to hearing their stories on their return.

Staff News
Mrs Kate Cooper, our Librarian, has been offered another position in the Senior School as Pupil Development Centre and Exam Office Administrator and we are currently seeking a Librarian for the Prep School. In the interim, we welcome Mrs Kim Kelly, who also works in the Pre-Prep, as our Librarian and look forward to making her feel welcome.

Mrs Petrie
Congratulations to Mrs Petrie who completed the London Marathon on Sunday in 4.5 hours. Mrs Petrie said that it was an amazing experience and would like to thank everyone who supported her in raising over £3,300 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Finally...
I have to share a personal highlight this week. On Wednesday, I joined in with the bowling practice at the nets with the Colts Warriors and on my first attempt hit a wicket - the boys were impressed! Having reached perfection, I moved onto the rounders pitch…

Achievements
Libby Hawkins (Y7) and Casey Hollyman (Y8) appeared at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket in a production of "Stagecoach West End Live".  They were selected along with other members of the Northampton Stagecoach School to perform a Magic-themed medley, with music from Queen and Harry Potter.
Libby Hawkins' County music string group was successful at a Regional music for youth event and they have been invited to take part in the national festival finals at the Birmingham Symphony Hall in July with Libby as the lead viola.
Maddie Murphy (Y5) was awarded Most Improved Player and Francesca Benham (Y5) was awarded Player of the Year from Wellingborough Hockey Club.
Maddie King (Y6) was awarded the U11 Girls Most Improved Player and Polly Ross (Y6) was awarded U11 Girls Player of the Year from Kettering Hockey Club.

French Theatre Production for Years 7 and 8
On Tuesday, 26th April, Onatti French Theatre brought their touring production of “Les Garçons” to Wellingborough and transformed the Prep School Hall with their clever set and comedic acting. Following the trials and tribulations of Nathalie, a teenage babysitter whose love life and part time job cause chaos throughout the course of one evening, the play was entertaining and highly interactive, with pupils acting as go-betweens to help her out! Although the script is pitched at GCSE level pupils, the pupils in Years 7 and 8 listened carefully and followed the action with ease, and Alex and Hélène, the actors, commented afterwards that they had been one of the most attentive audiences to whom they had performed. Pupils commented that although the language was challenging, the high quality acting made it easy to follow; the chance to enjoy something a little ‘different’ was valued by all. It was great to welcome parents to the show too and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Year 6 Willow Workshop
We welcomed Sue Kirk, a willow sculptor and basket maker into school on Tuesday 26th April to work with Year 6 pupils. The deer that have graced the grassy bank by the Chapel for nearly seven years, originally made by the current upper sixth pupils and Sue Kirk, were very frail and brittle so they were remade by 6HC and 6LI. Despite working through hail, snow, arctic winds and at times very welcoming bright sunshine the Year 6 worked together in small groups to recreate the herd of deer.  Flora Baxter commented that it was “the very best team challenge she had ever worked on because everyone was working together and not one person argued!” They are now fit for another 7 years! The lucky 6LW worked inside in the warmth to create a cluster of giant dragonflies. Grateful thanks go to Sue Kirk for guiding and teaching the children throughout the day and a host of parent helpers (Mrs Ross, Ms Saxby, Mrs Fernley, Ms Parrish and Mrs Kirk) who were invaluable. Special thanks go to Mrs Colabuono, our art technician, who helped orchestrate the whole day.

Mrs Roberts

Equestrian
We were delighted to hear that one of our pupils, Niall Mahon entered his first local showjumping competition last weekend on his new pony and was placed in the rosettes.  We look forward to the pair becoming part of our school equestrian team.

On Thursday 2nd June, we will be holding our annual Interschools Showjumping Competition at The College Equestrian Centre, Keysoe.  This is a regional qualifier for the National Schools’ Finals in October and we hope as many of our equestrian team as possible will be able to compete for Wellingborough.  Spectators are welcome, the event will run for the whole day and there is an onsite café where refreshments can be purchased.  We would like to thank the Northampton branch of Carter Jonas for sponsoring one of the classes and Tim Stockdale for providing prizes for the winners. Additionally, if there are any parents or pupils who would like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact Mrs Owen via email as she is looking for ring stewards, runners and scorers. Nearly New Shop Volunteer(s) Wanted
Lisa Cherry is stepping down at the end of this academic year so if you would be willing to give up around an hour every other Thursday afternoon to help in the shop we would love to hear from you. It fits in with school pickup at the end of the day so there is no evening commitment and I will continue to do all the admin and finance and deal with parents' queries. We also open on one extra day in the summer term for new Year 4 pupils moving-up day and on induction afternoon just before the start of the new term in September.  It would be great to hear from anyone, particularly in current Y4/Y5 so we have a Prep parent involved. It's very easy, very sociable, a good way to meet lots of parents from both Prep and Senior Schools and a great way to give something back. If you'd like to get involved with a friend and would like to take over running the shop please get in touch as I may also be looking to step down within the next 12 months. Fixed or Growth Mindset
A conversation with a Year 8 pupil this week triggered me to think about Mindset. In a fixed mindset, students believe their basic abilities, their intelligence and their talents are just fixed traits. In a growth mindset, students understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. It is really important that we encourage a growth mindset in our young people. A growing body of evidence also suggests that the way people praise us has a significant impact on our Mindset. Psychology Professor Carol Dweck demonstrated that praising students for their intelligence rather than their effort can actually make them perform drastically worse over time. In one of Dweck's experiments, students were either told following a test "you must be smart at these problems" or "you must have worked hard at these problems". Following this, the scores of the students who were praised for their intelligence dropped in further tests, while the scores of the children who were praised for their effort increased. The students who were praised for their intelligence avoided further challenging tasks while the students who were praised for their effort proceeded to more challenging tasks.  If you are interested in reading further, Dweck has written numerous books on the subject and is a TED speaker.

School Governors’ Visit
Next Wednesday, we are really looking forward to welcoming 7 School Governors to the Prep School for the day. They will visit classes and spend some time in conversation with the pupils. We are really fortunate to have such dedicated and supportive Governors and look forward to showcasing the fantastic work in our School.

5RR Assembly
We were treated to a super assembly last week when 5RR explained to us the difference between skills and talents. Talents are our innate ability to do something and a skill is a learnt ability. The difference between the two being hardwork and persistence, they told us. We heard all about 5RRs talents and the skills they were learning at School and at home. A really great assembly. Well done 5RR

Finally, something that made me smile this week… as I said farewell to the Year 4 pupils on Wednesday as they set off to Hilltop for their 3 day camp I asked a group if they had brought their favourite cuddly toy. Oh no they replied, “we have brought our second favourite teddy bear just in case something happens to the special one.” Just gorgeous.

Healthy Snacks
We are a ‘Healthy Eating’ and ‘Allergy Aware’ site. Pupils are welcome to bring in healthy snacks for their breaks, for example fruit, vegetables or health bars. We request that foods containing any form of nut are not brought onto the school premises. We recognise the importance of drinking water throughout the day. We have a number of water fountains in various parts of the site for pupils to use. Pupils are encouraged to bring water into the school in clear plastic bottles. These bottles may be brought into the classroom or out onto the games fields. They can be refilled as necessary from the water fountains.

Achievements
Henry Grayson (Y7) and Lottie Heaver (Y7) played tennis for the U12 county teams over the bank holiday weekend. Some very tough opponents but both did really well with the boys coming third and the girls fourth.
Daisy-mai Crossman (Y6) achieved a Distinction in her Grade 1 Piano exam.

Year 8 RS Trip to London
Alarm clocks throughout Northamptonshire buzzed unusually early to ensure that 77 Year 8 pupils managed to leave school shortly after 8 o’clock and arrive in London by 10:30 for their visit to Regent’s Park Mosque and two synagogues (the Liberal Jewish Synagogue near the mosque and Hampstead Orthodox Synagogue). At all places of worship they listened to detailed explanations of what it means to live and worship in modern Britain as an observant Jew and Muslim, and some had a chance to explore the visual delights of the stained glass in Hampstead Synagogue, while those at the Liberal Synagogue got to taste some chollah bread. The highlight of the day, after a picnic in nearby Regent’s Park, was the chance to absorb the atmosphere, sights and sounds of over 200 worshippers in the mosque observing lunchtime prayers – something which no school textbook can hope to achieve, and definitely worth the early reveille.

Hilarity Wins the Day
What fun it was to listen to so many eloquent young men and women trying to persuade with messages that were crucial, relevant and personal. This year, the Year 8 Public Speaking Competition featured a huge variety of topics. Pupils’ speeches were all well-structured and made full use of the rhetorical devices studied last term, but performances on the day made the difference: confidence, conviction and comedy triumphed. Edward Colmer entertained us with the idea that Jesus’ teachings might just be the result of “Chinese whispers”, nevertheless we had to accept he was “real”. Archie Arrowsmith made an impassioned defence, with super imagery, of his favourite pastime: shooting. Miles King and Imogen Smith motivated us all to save lives by signing up to organ donation (I’ve done it!), and Grace Cunningham wanted everyone to “Lose a Phone; Get a Life!” (Interestingly, overuse of technology at home has been a feature of pupils’ worries for the past two years). Our judge, Beverly Evans (professional scriptwriter, playwright and actress), had a tough but entertaining job for which we thank her profusely. Rhys Neal-Davies’ heartfelt plea to spend more quality time with your siblings whilst you can, and Olivia Afonso-Drury’s amusing diatribe accusing us all of being “Monkeys, Martyrs or Megalomaniacs” gained Special Mentions. Jamie Howell’s hilarious impassioned defence of “Clucky’s” salvation (an attack on battery farming) achieved 3rd. Akaash Baiju’s riotous railing, like Trump’s, brought the house down to gain 2nd, and Euan Burns brought tears of laughter to many an eye with his attack on “the H word” and the “slavery“ of homework  (a hot topic at the moment). The People’s Vote was almost identical, but Edward and Rhys came 3rd=, knocking Clucky slightly off his perch (again!).  Mrs Knox was delighted with the standard and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, the first of many competitions to come.

Reading Corner
With a generous grant from the Foundation Office, we were able to purchase items for our splendid new reading corner in the library. As soon as the cushions and rug were in place, the children flocked to it, grabbed a book and found a comfy spot to read. It has been a terrific new addition to the library and we are extremely grateful for this generous grant. Reading is such a key skill and providing opportunities to read in a relaxed setting is a key ingredient to ensure reading for pleasure is embraced.

Governors visit our School
This week, we were delighted to welcome the Governors to the Prep School. They spent time in classes with pupils, joined in with hymn practice and enjoyed a Q&A session with Year 8 pupils. The feedback has been lovely: “We all considered our visit to be extremely valuable and helpful, as well as leaving us with high praise for what we saw and heard.” “The group discussion with the Senior Pupils showed how confident and enthusiastic these young people have already become with the flow of answers and questions being so natural”. Following questions from the pupils, the Governors were also able to explain the key role they play in the governance of the School. A really enjoyable morning.

American Songbook
The pupils all sang beautifully at the American Song Book tea time recital. Those who have ever sung a solo will appreciate how nerve-racking it is to stand up in front of a large audience. The pupils sang a number of well-known tunes and did so to a very high standard. Well done to all of the performers.

Achievements
Jack Mason (Y6) won the Wellingborough Open Archery Club Outdoor Open Junior Windsor shoot and has been invited as Captains Guest at the Ivy Keating Inter-County shoot between Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.
Frankie Freeman-Hall (Y8) has been nominated by the County U13 hockey as a player with potential and has been invited to attend the Midlands U13 hockey coaching programme.
Niall Mahon (Y5) was awarded the Chief Scout’s Silver Award and his seconder stripe for scouts.

Hilltop 2016
Sun hats, sun cream, sun glasses and shorts? These are rare spotted things in Norfolk in early May but Year 4 were lucky this year as the sun shone all three of their days at Hilltop Outdoor Centre. Early on Wednesday morning 45 excited children set off on ‘The best trip ever!’ according to one child overheard after the first lots of activities had been completed. As soon as rooms and groups were assigned the children headed off to enjoy the first of their activities. It was the much anticipated ‘Big Zipper’ and archery for some, fire building, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows followed by the assault course for others and crate stacking and orienteering for the rest. An evening in the enchanted forest followed dinner where some of the children even managed to practice their maths! Thursday brought a morning at the beach and after a quick stop for ice creams on the way down we scoured the rock-pools for creatures that were being somewhat elusive this year! An afternoon of activities and the ever popular Mad Hatters game in the forest topped off a fabulous day. However, time flies when you are having fun, and we were soon packing bags again and climbing on the coach for the journey home. All in all, it was a very successful trip and hopefully one that the children will remember for a long time to come. Thank you to the staff that gave up their time to accompany the children and make it such a big success.

Gala Dinner
Last Friday saw 140 adults enjoy a three course meal fully prepared by our Year 8 pupils. The chefs, sommeliers, waiters, waitresses, meet and greet team, musicians and photographers were all fully engaged from start to finish and there were a lot of children with sore feet by the end of the night! A big thank you to Darren, Elaine and their teams for a wonderful event which is always a highlight of the year, but also a tear jerking reminder to our Year 8 parents that their children are growing up ever too fast. Thank you to all of the parents who came to support this event.

Equestrian Report – Winchester House Hunter Trials
Sunday 8th May 2016
The hottest day of the year so far saw Lauren Church, Lucy Miles and Ella Miles competing at the Winchester House Hunter Trials in the 90cm team event.  Lauren competing her young horse in its very first cross country event did a beautiful clear and came home delighted.  Lucy on her youngster also completed a fabulous clear round.  Ella completed the first half of the course but then sadly had some problems with her cheeky pony and didn't manage to complete the course due to injury.  The girls did the school and each other proud, helping and encouraging each other around a big course, being supportive and above all they 'had fun'. Competing in the 50/60cm class, Oliver had a wonderful clear round, despite Brandy being spooky and trying to run out at the dark fences! He had the fastest round of the day and jumped all the bonus fences.  Brandy in fact enjoyed it so  much that he didn’t slow down to trot over the finish line so unfortunately they both just missed out on the placings. A lovely venue with very inviting fences but not at all easy so very well done to everyone.

Important information about new Progress Tests in English (PTE)
The Progress Tests in English (the PTE) are the new nationally age standardised tests for pupils aged 5-14, which are gradually replacing the previous Progress in English (PiE) papers, but which test the same skills in an almost identical fashion. Each has been tested on up to 35,000 pupils across the nation. The results are comparable with those of the PiE papers, so that monitoring of older progress data (which the English department records throughout a pupil’s time at the Prep School) will be seamless.  Practice papers do not exist and cannot be bought. All pupils practise these skills in their English lessons and homework throughout the year. This is now an online test, in two parts, and contains the following:

  1. a spelling test (an age-appropriate passage which is read to the pupils twice, and they then type in the correct spellings of various words contained within it)
  2. a test of grammar and punctuation (a passage containing a variety of errors they have to spot)
  3. two reading comprehensions: one fiction, one non-fiction (testing retrieval, simple inference, complex inference and knowledge of authorial technique).

Data from these tests (as is the case with the PiE papers) show pupils’ skills in the above core categories, their progress in the areas above, their reading and writing levels, their standardised age scores (the national average SAS being 100), scale scores, where they stand in relation to the national average and their peers within our School.  Each pupil’s report will contain the following: his/her standardised age score, the national average and the School average for each year group.  May I take this opportunity to clarify that a pupils’ standardised age score (SAS) remaining the same as achieved last Trinity equates to one year’s expected progress.

St. Faith’s Athletics
On Thursday the athletics team went to their first fixture of the season away at St. Faith’s in Cambridge. With the sun gazing down we were all treated to a veritable athletics delight, with the team performing to an incredible level. With over 10 first places and 10 second places the team as a whole recorded their highest ever points total with the Seniors (Years 7 & 8) winning the senior competition and the Juniors (Years 4, 5 & 6) securing 2nd place in the junior competition. These are the best results Wellingborough has achieved in my nine years of taking teams to this event and it is down to the athletes hard work, dedication and willingness to succeed. With so many victories it is hard to name a few but the performances of the day go to Etienne Maughan in the Year 6 200m (setting a new school record), Lucas Brazier in the Year 5 800m (who competed despite being unwell) and Jack Buchan in the Year 8 200m. Well done to all those involved in what was a tremendous achievement against some extremely strong opposition. Thanks must also go to all the parents who support the athletes wherever we go and whose encouragement is unmatched by any other groups of supporters. Thanks also to Mr Irvine for his advice, time and support given to the athletes.

Thank you to those parents who joined us this week to hear a presentation from Maggie Foan from Safety Centre MK about Internet Safety. The Internet has drastically changed the way that children interact with the world. They have access to in-depth knowledge, tools to express their creativity and people from all over the world. Yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect with the world, the Internet also offers new risks. We were given lots of tips and advice on how to help our children and ourselves in this net savvy world.

  1. Become a net-savvy parent - The best safeguard against online dangers is being informed. Jump in and learn the basics of the Internet - read articles, come to a presentation and talk to other parents. You don’t have to be an expert to have a handle on your child’s online world.
  2. "Chat" with your children - Develop an open dialogue so that you can talk about the benefits and dangers of the Internet. Cultivate an interest in their online activities - their favorite websites, online games and interests. And don’t be afraid to ask your children who they are talking to online and what they are talking about.
  3. Agree on a game plan - Agree on and write some family guidelines for using the Internet and mobile phones. Ensure that your children know to never share personal information on the Internet and that they should tell you about any online activity or contact that makes them uncomfortable. Talk to them also about their digital footprint.
  4. Protect your computer - Take advantage of the software that exists to help parents manage their children’s computer experience. In only a few minutes, parental control software can block inappropriate websites, restrict the amount of time that your children use the Internet and monitor their Instant Messenger chats to protect them.
  5. Explore the Internet as a family - With a game plan and a protected computer, you can now encourage your family to take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer. Take a genuine interest in what your children are doing and stay engaged with them online.

New Parents’ Coffee Morning
It was a great pleasure to welcome over 65 parents this week to our new parent Coffee Morning. Our Heads of Music and Sport, Karl Leutfeld and Lee Irvine, shared the exciting activities ahead for our new pupils and our Wellbeing Manager, Gemma Saunders, gave some excellent advice on how to successfully achieve the transition to the Prep School for both pupils and parents. If you would like a copy of this useful Transition Booklet for your own information, please contact the Prep Office. We are looking forward to welcoming all new pupils for their induction days next half term.

Growth Mindeset
I have had a number of interesting conversations with parents over the topic of Growth Mindset following my article a few weeks ago. It triggered a few people to go out and purchase Carol Dweck’s book and I applaud them for that. To view a parent brief on Mindset with some strategies you can use at home click here.

Talking about Mindset and, being a true believer in a Growth Mindset, I asked our Head of Sport if I could coach a sports team. He immediately suggested bowling. He is adamant he meant the cricket variety but I am sure he meant lawn bowls!

Inter-Club Quiz Championship
On Tuesday, the first round of the new inter-Club quiz was held and Bears and Jaguars competed in the first match for a chance to go forward to the second round of the competition. After the first set of questions, Jaguars went into the lead by 11 points to 7 but, after that, Bears pulled ahead to win by 21 points to 17. The match was closely fought but bears will now go into the second round. However, if by the end of the first round, Jaguars have the highest score of the three losing teams, they could also go forward to round two.

This week, I attended a conference entitled "Raising Standards in UK Independent Schools" and heard some engaging and thought provoking talks by educators and influencers. The presentations challenged us to reflect on the main levers for improving standards in schools. From assessment to curriculum changes, from learning environments to co-curricular activities, from personalised learning to mindfulness. We were urged as school leaders to reflect deeply on the role we play in shaping the lives of the young people in our care. As we begin to develop the Prep School Development Plan for 2016/17, these learnings will be at the forefront of our thinking.  During our INSET day, we will be considering the results from the parent survey conducted this term. Again, thank you for your participation in this important initiative. The feedback will help inform us as we develop our plans for the future. Additionally during the day, we will be engaging in a Gallery Walk where each Department will share and learn from examples of best practice. We will look at student work, examples of assessment and differentiation and cross-curricular initiatives. As teachers, we are continually looking to improve our skills, honing our craft to deliver the highest quality educational experiences for the pupils. As John Hattie cites in his book - Visible Learning for Teachers: Maximizing Impact on Learning: “those teachers who are students of their own impact are the teachers who are the most influential in raising students’ achievement.”

I wish you and your children a time of rest next week and look forward to seeing the pupils back on Monday 6th June ready for an action packed half term.

Tennis
Saturday’s tennis matches for the Years 7 & 8 girls was fantastic. 15 girls played as 8 pairs against Stamford School with some pleasing results and exceptional effort and improvement. A special mention must go to Sophie Richardson who played as a single against two different doubles pairs losing the first match but winning the second by herself 6-1, 6-2. Outstanding perseverance and determination. Pairs 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 had tough matches but they were all delighted to win a few games within their three set defeats. The most amazing games came from pair 1 and pair 7. Pair 7, Zsofia Libertiny and Pippa Chadwick, having lost their first set 1-6 went on to win a tense and exciting second set as a 6-6 b then tie break win of 7-4. Some excellent rallies were seen in this epic 45 minute set. Pair 1, Lottie Heaver and Millie Webb, both Year 7 girls, were outstanding throughout the morning playing against the Stamford U13B pair winning comfortably 6-0 then playing the U13A pair winning both sets 6-4 and then 6-5 in an exciting final game decider. An awesome morning of tennis.

HEADMASTER'S COMMENTS

Singers’ Recital
Those who have ever sung a solo will appreciate how nerve-racking it is to stand up in front of a large audience - that is what a group of seven Y4 to Y6 pupils did on Monday. They all sang beautifully giving us a great start to the week. Well done Madeline, Isabella, Erin, Henrietta, Lucy, Olivia and Emily-May.

We were in for a further treat at the Tea-Time Recital when we had the opportunity to hear the girls again, as well as a ‘goodly’ number of other performers. The benefit of having senior students perform in the same concert is that our youngsters can aspire to reaching similar levels of musicianship. Two senior students in particular (Sarah Crookes and Sophie Austin) have been great stalwarts of the Music Department, not only singing to a very high standard but always looking after and encouraging the younger pupils. Congratulations to all performers.

School Photo

To have 300 pupils and 40 staff in the right place at the right time requires organisation. On Monday this operation was carried out with ‘military fashion’ precision, taking just 45 minutes from the moment the pupils started to move down to the fields to the time they were back in the classrooms. Details on when and how a photograph can be purchased will be announced in due course.

Governors
During the year, and for each part of the School, members of the governing body take one morning to visit and find out first-hand what is happening in the School. Not only do they visit classes and watch the teachers and pupils in action but they have opportunities to discuss new initiatives with HoDs and SLT members. Over the last two years we have introduced a pupils’ panel to meet a group of governors in a Q&A session. On Wednesday morning the Governors visited and this was the feedback from one of them:

‘I was really impressed by the way in which the pupils approached their learning and particularly by their willingness to come to the front of the class to present their ideas. Particular thanks to the pupils of 4AK, especially Francesca, who was my guide and to the members of Jaguars who were rendered speechless when they heard I was Club Captain 26 years before they were born!’

Achievements
David Howells played his first visually impaired county cricket match for Northampton and has been asked to play again on Sunday against Gloucestershire. Last week he was also opening batsman for his club (Stony Stratford).
Lili Howe achieved the 1st place trophy for the U8 Solo Greek Dance at the Classical Greek Dance Festival.

Charity Cycle
Five current and past Wellingborough mums have got together to cycle 330 miles over 4 days from London to Paris in September to raise money for charity. Mrs Garley-Evans, Mrs Hill, Mrs Marriott-Payne, Mrs Metcalfe and Mrs Stoute are raising money for 3 charities: Hannah Payne Riding for the Disabled, Alzheimers Society and Niamh¹s Next Step. For more information and to sponsor click here.

Open Farm Sunday
Sunday 7th June 2015 is National Open Farm Sunday. Mr and Mrs Mahon of Glebe Farm, Podington will be open to the general public to educate both young and old about agriculture and food production. For more information click here.

Some familiar and some new events
Relaxation: The season of exams and tests is upon us and with that can come stress. So, in this month of mindfulness, we introduced some sessions of relaxation. This provided an opportunity to step out of a very fast-paced day to clear the mind and relax.

Golf: Our annual PS Open Golf Tournament took place at Rushden Golf Club on Tuesday. Sixteen keen golfers took part playing a lovely course on a beautiful evening. Congratulations to Michael Hinds on winning the tournament. Thank you to all the staff that volunteered to mark the cards and support the players and to Mr Russell for organising the event.  Thanks also go to Adrian Clifford, PGA Golf Professional, who hosted the event at Rushden.

Poetry: can be read quietly, recited or it can be performed! On Thursday poetry was brought to life by performance poet Adisa the Verbalizer. A full report will be available next week.

Bushcraft: is the flagship event/experience of the Y8 leadership programme, held in the final two weeks of their time in the PS. Richard from, The Bushcraft Company, gave a talk to the pupils and their parents giving them an insight on what they are to expect.

Assembly
5KG said an emphatic no to exam stress. They gave us some unusual ideas and coping strategies to think about, in their humorous Habits of Mind filled assembly. Well done to all the performers and thank you Mr Gray for giving us the Birdie Song, twice, in your final form assembly.

Mr Mitchell

Relaxation and Mindfulness
Rosie Stevens, our Emotional and Wellbeing practitioner led some lunchtime relaxation sessions this week. Over 50 pupils took up the opportunity for some 'down time,' looking at their relaxation techniques, including breathing patterns and an opportunity for reflection. The session was so popular we will be hosting another lunchtime slot next Thursday.

Welcome back to the final half term
I have been told that this is the busiest and best half term with lots to look forward to and celebrate. I am certainly looking forward to the Family Fun Evening next Friday with cricket, rounders, a pig roast, champagne and popular inflatables for the children. Please come along, bring a deck chair and enjoy a sociable evening with friends. In order to ensure that this event is a huge success we do ask for volunteers to help man the attractions. Please email Sam Cunningham if you can spare an hour during the following slots 4.15pm, 5:15pm, 6.15pm and 7.15pm. Your help is greatly appreciated. Click here.

The Family of Schools Day on the 25th June is also taking shape beautifully with much to look forward to.  Our Open Day, when the classrooms are open and our pupils showcase their work with be followed by an afternoon of exciting Sports. Again, another event not to be missed. On this day Year 6, who are taking part in the Fiver Challenge (where the pupils are encouraged to set up and run their own mini-business) will be selling their items, so please support them in their endeavours.

As we near the end of the term, we also begin to welcome new pupils as they join us for their induction days. These days help ensure a smooth transition to the school. Thank you to the pupils who have offered to be a guardian for the day. An important role.

Staff News
At the end of the term, we say farewell to a number of staff. Jane Sanders is retiring at the end of 30 years of outstanding and loyal service to the School. Louise Barltrop has accepted a promotional position in a school in Northampton, Chris Pickett is taking a one year sabbatical to further his studies and undertake some charitable work and Mandy White will be relocating to the Isle of Wight. We look forward to acknowledging their outstanding and dedicated service to the school when we say farewell at the end of this term.

Congratulations to Paul and Lucy Dennis on the birth of baby Oliver. Mum, Baby and Dad are doing extremely well.

School Uniform
A quick reminder of the requirements for school uniform, particularly, girls’ socks. Whilst I appreciate that frilly socks are indeed pretty, they are not part of the uniform and we do pride ourselves on the presentation of our pupils. Can I please ask you to support us by allowing your daughter to only wear plain white socks, ankle or knee length during the remainder of this term.

Mrs Knox

Achievements
During Monday’s assembly, Mrs Knox congratulated all the pupils who took part in the Cancer Research UK Race for Life 5K challenge on Sunday 5th June at Abington Park Northampton. We have been advised that Tanaka Jalathge (Y7), together with her mum, completed the race and have so far raised £345 for this worthy cause.
Kiran Thakrar (Y4) who achieved first place in her descant recorder solo class at the Northampton Music Festival
Isabelle Thomas (Y6) achieved 1st place in 45cm, 3rd in 55cm and 5th in 65cm horse jumping at the Glebe Farm Equestrian event.
Ella Harvey (Y6) and Iris Kirk (Y6) had the honour of being flag bearers at the Northants County Cricket T20 match on 27th May at the county ground. Whilst there they were interviewed live by BBC Northampton's Annabel Amos about their cricketing exploits for the U11 Girls County team. If you would like to listen to the interview please click here. They are on at around 17 minutes in.

Year 6 Fiver Challenge
This year’s Fiver Challenge is now underway. Our Year 6 pupils have each been given £5, along with the task of developing a profit-making business during the month of June. There will be a wide variety of products on sale from cupcakes to bouncy balls and chocolate truffles to personalised framed names as well as a talent show for pupils to perform in or come as an audience member. The pupils will have the opportunity to sell their products in School on two Enterprise Days. The first of these is Tuesday 21st June where they will set up stalls at breaktimes to sell to pupils. The second opportunity will be on our Open Day, Saturday 25th June, where they will be selling their products to staff, pupils and parents (more details to follow nearer the time). We wish the pupils good luck in their entrepreneurial endeavours and hope that they have many satisfied customers.

Year 4 History
Year 4 have been learning all about Viking longships in their History lessons over the past two weeks. With the aid of media, they have learned what Viking longships would have looked like, what they were made from, how they were powered, what life was like on board ship and why they built them. The children then produced some information sheets about the longship and this week they have enjoyed creating their own version of a longship for our display.

Club Quiz
Not a ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ but a ‘Beating in the Meeting Room’!
On Tuesday, 7th June, Wolves Quiz Team met Tigers for the third and final match of the First Round of the WPS Club Quiz Competition. Very quickly Tigers took the lead and seemed set for a runaway win but then Wolves woke up and caught a number of the questions dropped by Tigers. Notable in this flurry of action was Ben Perry. By the close of the match Tigers had 14 points but Wolves had 20. This  means that Wolves go forward to the Second Round in which Bears meet Lions and, to answer a question that has been asked numerous times this week, Wolves will meet First Round ‘best losers’ Jaguars to settle who will meet in the Final Round in July. All to play for!

Mr Grove

Equestrian
During the half term holiday, we held the annual Wellingborough showjumping competition at The College Equestrian Centre, Keysoe.  Pupils attended from 28 schools covering 12 counties and there were over 100 riders competing during the day.  From the Prep School, Oliver Morris rode a lovely clear round to achieve 2nd place in the 60cm class and, later in the day, Ella Miles joined her sister, Lucy and Alex Holden from the Senior School to ride as a team in the hotly contested 80cm class.  All 3 riders performed well and came away with 5th place rosettes.  Congratulations to all our riders and a huge thank you to all the staff, parents and pupils who volunteered to help on the day – we wouldn’t be able to run the show without you!

Mrs Owen

Horrible Histories
An excited Year 4 set off to the Derngate theatre on Thursday to see Horrible Histories live - Incredible Invaders. The children were treated to a whistle stop tour through 1000 years of history as the four actors and actresses re-enacted, in true horrible histories style, the main events of the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking period in Britain. The first half engaged the children through Boudicca's rebellion against Governor Paulinus in the 'Great British Bust Up' and the story of Caratacus. The second half was brought to life through 3D glasses and, I for one, was made to jump on several occasions as several creatures emerged from the screen not to mention a Viking longship! We also learned of Viking punishments such as being thrown into a pit of poisonous snakes or picking stones out of pots of boiling water! Alfred the Great put in an appearance too at one point. The show finished with a short foray into the Norman invasion to give the children a taste of what is to come later! It was a fantastic way to celebrate what the children have learned this year in their history lessons and I'm sure it will remain in their memories for long time to come.

East Region Athletics Finals
The senior athletes attended the East Region Finals on Thursday, 9th June at Bedford International Stadium, where over 1000 athletes from the 50 top schools in the region were competing in Years 6, 7 and 8 events. All our athletes performed admirably, with many setting new personal best times and distances. In Year 6 Etienne Maughan broke both the 100 metres and 200 metres regional records with times of 13.7 seconds and 28.6 seconds respectively and easily qualified for the national finals in the 100 metres. Polly Ross continued her fine form in the shot and threw close to 7 metres to win and also qualify for the national finals. In Year 7, Jack Benham ran well to reach the hurdles final. Harry Long sprinted himself in to the 200 metres final equalling the school record at the same time. Millie Webb set a new personal best to finish second in the 200 metres which also qualified her for the national finals. In Year 8, Jack Buchan and Will Eccleston performed well on the track, Georgia Louison-Wride set a new personal best in the shot throwing close to over 8 metres and Ella Miles smashed her best in the 300 metres clocking a time of 51 seconds.

Next Tuesday is the turn of our Year 4 and 5 athletes and we wish them the best of luck for their regional finals at Cambridge. Thanks go to all the athletes who performed so well, to the parents for their support and encouragement and Mr Irvine for his advice, coaching and humour.
Can pupils please return athletics vests to the Prep Office on Monday.

WPSA Family Fun Evening
This evening is our Family Fun evening where plenty of entertainment has been organised by the WPSA. As well as a Hog Roast and Inflatables, you will have the opportunity to see our Cricket and Rounders’ teams in action. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the WPSA and, in particular, Sam Cunningham and her team for their outstanding organisation of the event and support of the Prep School. Also, to the team of volunteers who will work hard all evening to ensure the event is a success!

You will shortly receive a summary of the key findings from the parent satisfaction survey. The insight we gained from this exercise will be invaluable in our future planning. We were very pleased with the results of the survey and the high ratings given across many aspects of school life. We will, of course, look at areas where improvements can be made and seek to address them. We are always looking at ways of building on our successes and measures to improve areas rated less highly and a plan of action will be communicated to you.

Our final tea-time recital of the year featured singers and instrumentalists from the Prep and Senior Schools and we were entertained to a wonderful array of music and musicians. What a relaxing hour of musical delight!

There are many events to look forward to this term as we celebrate an action-packed year of learning culminating in Prize Giving on the 8th July. Details for all of the events are being sent out currently. If you have any questions about any event, please do not hesitate to contact the Prep Office on 01933 222698.

I look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming Open Day and Sports Day on Saturday 25th June.

5CW Assembly
Referendum to be held on 23 June 2016 “Should the UK remain a member of the  European Union, or leave the European Union?”
This morning we welcomed, to 5CW's assembly, the leaders of the five main political parties plus Mr Jean-Claude Juncker the Head of the EU. Each politician gave the School a 30 second summary of whether the UK should remain IN the EU or leave. The School watched question time, news round with a "so money supermarket" ad break before everyone made their own personal vote. The results from this morning’s Prep School referendum: 261 votes counted with 9 void ballot papers leaving a vote count of 96%:

  • IN = 173 votes 66%
  • OUT = 79 votes 30%

The Prep School votes to remain IN the EU.

Life Share
A new family, joining the School in September, are interested in a possible lift share. They live in Hartwell but any of these locations would be helpful: Roade, Wootton, Collingtree, Grange Park areas of Northampton. If you are able to help please contact jr@wellingboroughschool.org.

Mrs J Roberts

Mobile Phones
Please may we remind you of our policy regarding mobile phones. Unless the School has been informed, by letter to the Headmistress, that it is necessary for a pupil to have a mobile for their journey to and from School (if they travel by bus or train) mobile phones should not to be brought into School. Pupils permitted to have phones, must hand them into the Prep Office when they arrive at school each morning. The Prep Office telephone is available for use by all pupils throughout the day.

East Region Athletics
The Junior athletes competed at the East Region Finals at Cambridge University on Tuesday, 14th June, where 32 of the top prep schools contested the regional titles. As a school, we frequently perform amongst the best in the region, and this year was another great day for personal bests and battling hard.
Year 4
Fraser Evans hurdled into 4th in the final, and jumped 3m 34 in the Long Jump. Gracie Stevens sprinted to 4th in the 100m final, and jumped close to 3 metres in the Long Jump. Isobel Jaszczun threw a new best of 26m 10 in the rounders ball, and Harvey Turner ran a new personal best in the 600m. Grace Finn-Kelcey hurdled to 2nd in her heat, Georgia Brophy and Logan Burns ran to 3rd in their 75m heats, all just missing out on places in the finals. Charlie Sales sprinted to 4th in the 100m final, and threw a 3rd place distance of just over 35m in the cricket ball.
Year 5
Matthew Dobson hurdled into the boys’ final, and threw the cricket ball nearly 38m. Francesca Benham ran well in both the hurdles and 100m, and Annie Burgess jumped well in the Long jump and smashed her personal best in the 800m. Ollie Morris ran well in the 100m, and Ollie Buchan jumped 1m 10 in the high jump and ran hard in the 200m. Lucas Brazier jumped well in the Long Jump, and ran a fabulous race to set a new personal best and win the 800m title in a time of 2 minutes 38 seconds. The Year 5 boys relay team of Ollie Morris, Matthew, Ollie Buchan and Lucas all ran hard with some slick changeovers to claim 3rd place in the final.

Sports Day and the new athletics fixture at Broughton Manor are quickly approaching and we can all look forward to some hugely competitive and enthralling races. Thank you to all the athletes and the parents who support the events.

Prize Giving
You will have received notification of our change of date regarding the Prize Giving ceremony which will now be held on Friday 1st July from 10.00am - 11.30am. This follows the announcement that The Castle Theatre has been placed into liquidation and all theatrical performances and activities cancelled with immediate effect. I am fully aware of the importance and tradition of this very special end of year event. I am also conscious of the time parents will have asked off work and want to assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly. I do hope that you will still be able to join us at one of the most important calendared events of the Prep School as we celebrate the achievements of the pupils.

We have enjoyed a splendid week. We started off with the Ten Minute Tea-Time Theatre showcasing Year 5’s Shakespearean mastery! We were then enthralled by the outstanding concert given by the Aurin Girls’ Choir. Our own choir were thrilled to be able to rehearse and sing with this incredible choir.

We thoroughly enjoyed break time this week when Year 6 sold items made for their Fiver Challenge. There were some very creative items for sale and trading was brisk and busy with customers. They are also looking forward to opening their stalls tomorrow morning. I also want to congratulate the boys who cycled 4 times around Pitsford Lakes, a distance of 26.3 miles raising money for Cransley Hospice. My plan was to join them for a circuit, but after ½ mile they were so far ahead of me, I had to let the pocket rockets speed off and continued at a much more leisurely pace. Congratulations to Robbie Warren Thiemann, James Kemp, Jack Hollick, Tom Kenney, Harry Cadman and Barney Childs and the staff who accompanied them: Mr Whitby, Mr Hill and Miss Clark.

Tomorrow, we are smiling sweetly at the sky hoping that the sun will shine for our Open Morning and Sports Day.  I look forward to seeing and talking to many of you tomorrow.

Ada Padbury achieved a Distinction in her Primary Tap examination.

WPSA Family Fun Evening
Despite the dubious looking weather forecast the WPSA decided to go ahead with the Family fun night and thank goodness we did. The sun shone and the rain held off until the last ball was bowled. The event was incredibly well attended and it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces. The children thoroughly enjoyed the inflatables and the parents enjoyed watching them. The hog roast, cakes and tuck all sold out and the bar was virtually drunk dry. Thank you to all those who supported the event, especially the army of volunteers who gave up their time to man a stall, without your help we could not have run the evening. Also special thanks to Mr Irvine whose support was invaluable and to Mr Dennis for providing the commentary. This is my last event for the WPSA, the same applies for Lauren Crook, Jemma Arrowsmith and Caroline Benham as our children move up to the Senior School, it is great to go out on such a high.

Year 6 Visit to Peterborough Cathedral
Year 6 explored the history and architecture of Peterborough Cathedral on Monday, as part of their study of Christianity. We spent the day in the Cathedral and the nearby Education Centre and so stayed fairly dry, despite the heavy rain. Pupils were shown around the building and took photos of artefacts and different architectural styles in order to build up a picture of its development and use over the last 900 years. They also sketched some of the patterns found in the stone, wood, glass and textiles of the Cathedral. The sketches were later reworked in oil pastels and coloured inks and used to make striking collages, which will be on display at the Family of Schools day on Saturday. It was a lively and interesting trip, a satisfactory conclusion to our term’s work in RS.

Club Quiz
On Tuesday, Bears met Lions in the first match of the Second Round of the Club Quiz Championship. Lions were off to a slow start, with question after question passed over to Bears. Eventually, Lions woke up and began a flurry of successes, but it was too late. Bears lead was too great, proving again that the early bird gets the worm and the latecomer gets the bird! Bears’ victory means that they will play next week’s winners for the glory of the Championship Cup.

Year 4 visit to Glebe Farm
On Wednesday 45 Year 4 pupils visited Glebe Organic Farm in Woodford. Despite the wet weather, the pupils had a great experience and learnt lots about UK farming. They were able to learn about what happens on an organic farm and also learnt about some of the wildlife and habitats found on farms, including the hedgerows. Pupils learnt about soil, through practical investigation and some managed to enjoy a ride in a tractor trailer (before it had to be abandoned due to technical issues). Pupils also undertook a crop rotation activity and planted their own seeds which they were able to take home and watch grow. This visit supports Year 4 pupils in their recent geography module, which has focused on where our food comes from and the different types of farms that we have. Behaviour was excellent and the pupils represented the School in a very positive manner, despite being quite excited and wet from the rain! Many thanks to Wendy at Glebe Farm and to the Wellingborough staff that attended and ensured the trip was a success.

Prize Giving
What a wonderful Prize Giving ceremony we had on Friday and thank you if you were able to join us. We celebrated the achievements of our extraordinary pupils, heard from an inspirational guest speaker and OW, Anna Turney and shed a tear when the pupils sang their song: “See You Again”. To view and order photographs please click here

In my speech, I suggested four pillars to change that will keep us true to the fine heritage behind us as we move forward.

The first is to change wisely and change well. You’ve heard pupil and parent feedback is so important to me because it enables any change to be squarely based on community desire. As we change at Wellingborough, we’ll be drawing deeply on the wisdom and experience of educational researchers worldwide.

The second pillar is to change consistently and incrementally. Wise change can’t be rushed, but neither can it ever stop.

Change through leadership is the third pillar to change that I am committed to as I look to the future of Wellingborough.

Every change agenda needs champions – people who will lead the charge. From September, I will have two deputies; one solely responsible for Curriculum, while another will manage all Pastoral Care and School Operations. Also, there will be a Pastoral Coordinator, to support the pastoral welfare of pupils and a Year 4 Coordinator position to oversee this important transition year. Finally, a Coordinator of Academic Progress and Reporting, an area which you, as parents, fed back to us in the Parent Survey as being of the highest importance. In these leadership changes, we’ve had a single purpose: challenging, guiding and supporting each of our pupils through the Wellingborough Family of Schools, so that they emerge ready to change the world around them. The final pillar of change is: Ownership. To an extent, that’s me: newly arrived on your shores with what I’ve been told is a terribly broad Australian accent, which I am pleased to say has almost disappeared. But even more importantly, it means putting pupils at the very centre of their education so that they are inspired to learn and to not simply achieve.

Change wisely and well. Change consistently and incrementally. Change through leadership. And change who owns the learning. These are four avenues for gentle evolution that will be performed with the greatest of care and sensitivity.

So what might these look like at Wellingborough?
We’ll continue to improve our classroom practice inspiring and engaging our learners, and we’ll be looking at our learning spaces to ensure the environments we offer are places where every pupil can engage in deep, meaningful learning. We will look at how we provide feedback on the children’s progress and assess their learning so we teach them at their point of challenge. We will open up our classrooms and invite parents in so we can share our learning with you. We also intend to forge ever-closer connections with our parents and our wider Wellingborough community.

I came into teaching to change children’s lives, and I have never looked back.  A decade on, I still passionately believe that each of us as teachers has been given a gift to influence the lives of our pupils. To guide them, shape them, inspire them, enliven them, correct them and encourage them.

As Headmistress, my firm and resolute vision is that I want every one of our pupils to look back on their Wellingborough days and know they did the very best they could – and that every step of the way, they were supported by teachers who cared for them and believed in their potential.

Thank you for your support of the School this academic year and I look forward with great anticipation and joy as we begin a new chapter in September.

Congratulations to our new Student Leaders for 2016/17
Head Girl – Maria Warren Thiemann
Head Boy – George Ross

The Captains of each club are as follows:
Bears - Ella Hilton and Jonathan Rimmer
Jaguars - Philippa Chadwick and Tom Cawthorn
Lions - Elizabeth Hawkins and Mark Stockdale
Panthers - Molly Balzan and Tom Kenney
Tigers - Orla Hunt and Tommy Martin
Wolves - Rhianna Osborne and Thomas Duffin

I wish them the very best as they take on new and exciting leadership roles.

Achievements
Daisy-mai Crossman (Y6) achieved a bronze medal for the 50m breaststroke.
Jack Mason (Y6) came 7th in his category (U12 recurve, Bristol IV) at the GB Archery Junior National Outdoor Championships.
Harriet Askew (Y7) and Emily-May Palmer (Y7) danced at The Royal and Derngate on Saturday, 25th June, in the 75th Anniversary Gala for Mayhew School of Dancing. Both Harriet and Emily-May have been selected to dance at The Royal Albert Hall in October in the Dance Proms 2016.

Equestrian
On Sunday, 26th June, the equestrian team competed at the Ashfold School showjumping event. We took a team of four riders and for two of these it was their first time competing in the School team. One of our more seasoned riders, Oliver Morris, rode a lovely clear in his individual class and was unlucky to be just outside the rosettes in a very speedy jump off. In the first class for the team, Lucy Morris (Year 3), Niall Mahon and Isabelle Thomas all rode brilliant clear rounds resulting in them beating all the other schools and finishing in first place. In addition to this, individual placings were awarded based on style marks for the riders. Lucy finished in 5th and Niall was awarded first place with comments from the judges about his beautifully ridden round. In the second class, the same team competed and all rode clear again. Isabelle Thomas’s round was particularly quick and she achieved individual 2nd place against tough opposition. When the team results were announced, we were delighted to discover that, once again, the Wellingborough team had come in 1st place! This means that the team has now qualified for the NSEA Grass Roots Regional Finals which will be held in November. Well done to all four riders who rode so well and good luck at the finals.

Geography Homework Projects
As we approach the end of this school year can I take this opportunity to commend all pupils on another year of fantastic geography projects. Pupils are clearly developing their independence and their research skills through such projects and the creativity and imagination continues to impress me. However, as we think about moving into a new academic year there are a number of excellent projects still in school. If you would like to keep these projects, please can I ask you to collect them before the end of the week. Unfortunately, due to limited storage space, we will be unable to store lots of projects. Whatever projects are left in school on the 8th July will be sorted and either stored or disposed of (which would be a real shame).

Club Quiz Rollover!
On a sunny summer Tuesday morning, the last match of the semi-final took place in the open air. The victorious Wolves team was challenged by the ‘best losers’ from the first round, Jaguars. Unfortunately, Jaguars got off to a slow start and never really caught up. Wolves won by a three point lead and go through to the Final - an all-out battle with Bears at the end of term. Who will win the Cup? Find out on Friday!

Broughton Manor Athletics
On Thursday, 30th June, the junior athletics teams competed at the final event of the year at the brand new Broughton Manor competition held at the Stantonbury track in Milton Keynes. This event allowed our athletes (along with a Year 3 select team) to compete in quite a few disciplines and our athletes continued where they had left off with many setting new personal bests and quite a few competition records as well. The stand out athletes of the day were Charlie Sales (Y4) and Etienne Maughan (Y6) who, having both won numerous events, were recognised for their talents and hard work by being awarded the boys and girl athlete of the match trophies. My thanks go to all the athletes who have represented the School this term. We have set the bar high, and long may it continue. Thanks also to all the parents (including those of Year 3 pupils) for their tireless support and encouragement and to Mr Irvine for his backing and dedication to this extremely popular and exciting sport.

Our Year 8 pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning survival techniques on their Bushcraft experience whilst back at school we welcomed Year 3 to the Prep School for their induction day. Year 4 engaged us during their assembly with highlights of their first year in the Prep School.

Year 6 performed a Shakespeare play as part of their Drama Festival which was a resounding success. Congratulations to all performers and teachers.

Years 4-7 participated in an Active Learning Day on Wednesday with a whole day of activities which revolved around the upcoming Olympics. Thank you to Mrs Rowley-Burns for masterminding the event and the staff who ran superb activities. Sydney also enjoyed her day!

On Thursday, following a splendid Club Music final (congratulations to Bears) we celebrated Year 8’s final year in the Prep School with a Leavers’ Service in the Chapel.

Finally…

A very full and busy academic year comes to a close and I would like to thank all of the parents who have supported and encouraged their children to take part and make the most of the opportunities on offer. We said farewell to our leavers in assembly today and gave them each a Wellingborough Bear to help them remember their time here.

Thank you to Anne Huntingford who has kindly put herself forward for the position of WPSA Chair. The committee have voted Anne as the Acting Chair which will be formalised at the AGM on the 11th October.  Thank you to Sam Cunningham for her excellent leadership of the committee this year.

We look forward to seeing everyone again on the 5th September and wish you a really super summer break.

Achievements
Charlotte Holmes (Y7) has been selected to be one of 20 dancers from her Theatre School to perform on the stage at Silverstone on Saturday before Formula 1 qualifying.
Lili Howe (Y5) and Molly Barnes (Y7) both took part in the Dance World Cup held in Jersey. Lili won a Gold medal for her solo, 2 silvers and a bronze for groups. Molly won a silver with her Greek group.

Fabulous Fun at the Year 6 Shakespeare Festival
There were songs, dances, comedy and parody, romance and murder, suicides, spells, slaps, kisses, shots and devious plots. All three plays provided a barrel full of laughs. Proud parents roared with laughter and the children’s faces shone with enjoyment. After only a couple of weeks of rehearsals and a few drama lessons, the pupils stepped up to the challenges of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and ‘The Scottish Play’.  Everyone seemed to fall for the wrong person; fairies ‘rocked’ Titania to sleep; Mechanical mayhem resulted in corpsing; a deliciously drunken Petruchio trained a Kate who was fiercer than any dragon; and the Macbeths’ magnificently murderous climb to the throne depleted the Scottish population more rapidly than the Clearances! Building on their Y5 tea-time performances and their workshops with the Young Shakespeare Company, the pupils are clearly entirely comfortable with the Bard and enjoy his plays enormously. It’s a solid foundation for GCSE but, more importantly, it’s a hugely entertaining way to learn.

Sponsorship Appeal – International Indoor Cricket
I am honoured to have been selected to play for England in the Master's (35+) Indoor Cricket World Series to be played this coming October at the Action Indoor Cricket Centre in Birmingham.  The Women’s World Series will be made up of teams from the hosts, England plus Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
Indoor cricket is a fast paced, exciting format of cricket played inside a net cage by 8 players per team. Batsmen (or women) bat in pairs for four overs each with 5 runs deducted from the total whenever a wicket is lost. Each player must bowl two overs and runs are scored by hitting the scoring zones of the net and running between the stumps and the 'half way line' of a standard 22 yard wicket.
The World Series is an amateur competition and as such the players are self-funded, having to pay to take part in the competition, to purchase playing and training kit as well as covering all accommodation, medical and transport costs. Therefore we are seeking sponsors for both individual players and as a team in order to try and reduce the personal cost to everyone involved. Individual player costs are expected to be around £1,000 and any sponsorship would be greatly appreciated. If yourself, or someone you know, may be interested in sponsoring either myself or the team please contact me directly via email ak@wellingboroughschool.org for more information.

Welcome Back
I extend a warm welcome back to school and hope you have had an enjoyable summer break. The first week has gone by in a flash of excitement, activity and learning. All of our 86 new pupils have settled in incredibly quickly and already found their way around the playground and school. As one Year 4 boy confided in me: “the two best things about Year 4 are having two extra lessons a day and not having to hold anyone’s hand as we walk to the dining room”. Oh, the joy of those little steps towards independence.

I hope you have managed to peruse all of the communication this week, essential as we begin a new year together. The Curriculum Newsletters, published at the beginning of each term, will also be a useful source of information to see the range of activities the pupils will be engaging with. We have a term full of exciting events and I look forward to seeing you at some of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Club rugby and hockey on Wednesday. The Club spirit was extremely strong as each team tried their hardest to win points. Some positive changes have been made to the after school provision of sporting activities to encourage a full and inclusive participation in our sports programme.  Mr Irvine, our Head of Sport, has developed the programme to support our pupils in becoming strong all rounded sportsmen and sportswomen. Please see full details in the Sports section below.

Ardèche
The annual trip to the Ardèche for our Year 7 pupils proved to be a great success. My thanks to Ms Machin for her outstanding organisation skills, Miss Clark, Miss Thomas and Mr Buck who joined the trip and gave up their holiday to give the children memories that will last a lifetime. Mr Knox and I also thoroughly enjoyed the trip and even managed to get a full night’s sleep on the overnight bivi despite the presence of wild boars in the campsite!

Staff News
I welcome a number of new staff this term: Mrs Jenny Petrie (History/English) and Mr Lester Williams until Michaelmas (Maths/Geography) and Andrew Medhurst (Librarian).

Habits of Mind – Persistence
This year we are reinvigorating our use of the Habits of Mind in the Prep School and we will focus on one of the 16 Habits each half term. This half term we will be ‘Persisting’.  Monday’s assembly reintroduced us to persistence, complete with its own theme tune (ask your children to see if they can remember it!) and there will shortly be the launch of a competition where pupils will have the opportunity to submit a WPS Persisting Poster design.  Pupils will also be rewarded with pluses for demonstrating persistence in school and it would be super if parents could reinforce this message at home.

WPSA Meeting
The first WPSA meeting is being held on Wednesday, 14th September at 8pm in the Prep School Library. Any parents wishing to meet the committee will be warmly welcomed.

Form Tutor Letters
This week our form tutors have been writing a letter of introduction to the parents of the pupils in their form group which will be sent to parents via clarion. I hope it gives you a little insight into the form tutor of your child, who will be your first point of contact throughout the year. I am confident that the form tutor will develop a positive relationship with your child throughout the year, with both formal and informal tutor periods planned moving forwards. All staff will endeavour to respond to phone messages or emails within 24 hours.

They can be refilled as necessary from the water fountains.

'Worried about that? Drop in and chat!'
This Friday we had our first Wellbeing drop in session which was run by Gemma Saunders and Steve Hill, our Wellbeing Managers. Both Gemma and Steve work with a number of pupils across all three schools and they do a fantastic job in supporting our pupils with varying needs. The next 'drop in' is 11th November at 7:45am in the Pod.

Positive Parents Programme
Our Wellbeing Team have launched a support programme for parents which runs over nine sessions throughout the year - click here for full details. The first session is next Thursday, 15th September on 'Stress relief for parents.' The programme is free and you can select as many areas you feel may be particularly relevant to your family. Please do make use of this opportunity as the evenings will provide some fantastic advice and an opportunity for discussion on various areas. To book a place contact Gemma Saunders on gls@wellingboroughschool.org.

Chapel Choir - Service on Sunday
Chapel choristers need to arrive at Chapel at 10.15am this Sunday for a short rehearsal before the New Pupils' Service begins at 11.00am. The service should be finished by 12.00pm.

New Prep School Massed Orchestra
For the first time, we are inviting all pupils who play an orchestral instrument to join together to create a flagship ensemble for the Prep School. Pupils who currently play in Flute Group, Clarinet Group, Brass Group and String Group will be asked to come to a joint orchestra rehearsal each Tuesday from 4.15pm to 5.15pm, in preparation for a performance at the Christmas concert. Each of these groups will continue to have their own 'sectional' rehearsal at different times in the week. Any orchestral instrument players who are not currently in an ensemble are invited to come along to Tuesday rehearsals too. We look forward to presenting the new massed orchestra to parents at the Christmas concert.

Harvest Celebration 2016
The Chapel has been supporting the Daylight Centre Fellowship for some time now. We have been offering our support by generously providing basic food supplies to the most vulnerable people in the Wellingborough district. Some of the clients often have had problems with securing disability allowance and generating enough funding to feed themselves. Others have struck hard times due to a change in employment and it can often take a few weeks between becoming unemployed and receiving much needed benefit to feed their families. The need continues to increase year on year. This year we are going to try and double our efforts as a Family of Schools. On the 15th September I will be explaining to the pupils, firstly whom the Daylight Centre supports and secondly, what the Harvest season is all about. We will be inviting families of Wellingborough School to support others in the community providing  food and much needed supplies to those that are in need. We will be receiving the food donations during Chapel on the 22nd September. Click here for a list of foodstuffs that the Daylight Centre would warmly welcome. I would like to thank you in advance for your thought and generous giving in this season of Harvest.

  • Daily challenge:
    Monday 12th September - Jamaica
    Tuesday 13th September – Australia
    Wednesday 14th September – India
    Thursday 15th September – Pakistan
    Friday 16th September - Syria

Sports Announcements
Welcome Back
The sports department would like to welcome you back to another very busy term ahead. As you will see from the calendar there is lots of sport throughout the term with weekly rugby and hockey matches for all year groups.

Extra-Curricular Sport Practices
This term, we have made some changes for a number of reasons. In previous years, sports practices after school have occurred twice-weekly; open to pupils only in ‘A’ &‘B’ teams for the major sports played in any given term. We felt this was very narrow-minded and did not allow all pupils equal opportunities and experience or a broader extra-curricular programme.

Changes came into effect in the summer term, where our major sports (cricket, girls cricket and rounders) all had one after school practice and the other practice was replaced with a developing sport (athletics/triathlon). The benefits we observed from this change was more success across all ages throughout the Prep School and, more importantly, offering a broader and more balanced extra-curricular activity programme.

This year, we will apply the same structure across all three terms. With regards to this term, we will offer a rugby and hockey practice for each age group (open to all pupils not just in ‘A’ &‘B’ teams) alongside cross country, netball and football which takes place after October half term. We have introduced football and netball to allow pupils some pre-season training and as opportunity for staff to observe the pupils before the Lent term. With the introduction of rugby sevens in the Lent term, we will run an after school practice and be attending a couple of sevens rugby tournaments. It is important we get the balance right and not become a school that favours one particular sport. As you will see, we have also increased the number of fixtures we play in Year 4 for both boys and girls, and also increased many fixtures across the age groups on Saturday mornings.

As with any change, adaptation takes time, but I hope this answers many of your questions as to why the changes have taken place; the main has been to create a more inclusive, broad and balanced curriculum. Click here to view the activities on offer.

The end of another busy week draws to a close. At the start of the week, our Head Boy, George Ross and Head Girl, Maria Warren Thiemann, launched their theme for the year #whynot. They urged us to try new things, give different opportunities a go and say “why not” more often. Today in form time, all pupils have set themselves one academic and one wellbeing goal for the term and have been urged to think #whynot. In my address at Prize Giving in June, I commented that whilst goal setting is only a small thing, it’s big for the pupils as it reinforces their purpose and enthusiasm for learning. We also heard from our School Council and Charity reps about how we can get involved this year and I look forward to the small but significant changes these committees will bring about.

I would like to thank everyone who attended our first WPSA meeting this week and encourage everyone to support the activities this year. The first exciting event is the Quiz Night on Friday, 7th October. The teachers won easily last year (so I am led to believe) and the committee are determined to beat them! If you would like to join the committee, come along to our next meeting on Tuesday, 11th October.

I look forward to welcoming new parents to their first social event next Thursday 22nd September and hearing how you and your children have settled into the School.

Do you have a Question?
On Tuesday, 27th September, from 8.30am-9.30am in the Prep Library, members of the Senior Leadership Team will be available to answer questions. If you have a specific question in mind please email prep-head@wellingboroughschool.org. Alternatively, just pop in for a chat and meet the team.

Active Learning in Lessons
Last Friday’s Active Learning Day set us off to a good start with our thinking skills this term. Jason Buckley, who came to lead the sessions, was impressed with our pupils who were able to make an impassioned case in front of a large number of their peers. His quote of the day, by a WPS pupil, was in a discussion about whether to intervene on an alien planet to stop a child being caned or to let local custom prevail – “It may not be our place, but it is our place to decide what’s right and wrong.” Click here

This week, I have enjoyed popping into different classrooms to see some active learning lessons. Year 5 Science classes have been interpreting food packaging to see exactly what is in the food they eat, Maths have used our playground equipment to help practise their times tables and Year 7 pupils have taken on the role of detectives in a classic whodunit, in preparation for writing their own murder mysteries. There will be many more interesting activities happening over this academic year.

Positive Parents Programme
The next session of the wellbeing support programme for parents is ‘The Authoritative Parent’ on 27th September. The programme is free and you can select as many areas you feel may be particularly relevant to your family. Click here.

Playground
It has been such a pleasure to watch the pupils playing together so well in the playgrounds over the last two weeks. On the first day of term there were clear boundaries and rules set out by form tutors and it has been refreshing to see so many different games being played on the new handball courts and new painted areas of the playground; all being played within the children's own rules and expectations! Long may this, and the sunshine, continue.

Calendar
In line with the whole school, this year we will not be producing the printed calendar booklet.  However, the most up to date calendar, which includes weekly fixtures, is located on the website and is updated on a daily basis. Click here.

Jeans for Genes Day
On Friday, 23rd September, for a donation of £1, pupils are permitted to replace their trousers/skirts with blue jeans to support Jeans for Genes Day. This is a worthy cause and one that we have previously supported.

Year 4 Afternoon Tea
This week the Year 4s have been settling into the routine of Prep School life and showing great enthusiasm for learning. It is a delight to see how confident and happy they are already. In the playground, they have been organising themselves, playing handball and rope games or going to the Astroturf. Some have even mastered the rock and hopper! A highlight of the week for all three classes was Tea with the Headmistress, which was a very special occasion for all concerned. Click here.

Following feedback from parents, pupils and staff through the surveys  and focus groups conducted last term, we have gazed into the future and developed a clear and ambitious action plan to achieve important milestones taking us towards 2020. Our aim is for Wellingborough Prep School pupils to stand on their own as lifelong learners, equipped with a wide range of knowledge and skills, growing in confidence and independence, preparing to be major contributors in addressing global challenges. We aim to create a culture of achievement within a dynamic and stimulating learning environment where the pupils are provided with opportunities to discover and develop their unique talents and abilities. Within that, we want you, our families, to be recognised as integral members of the school community and our partners in your child’s education. The action plan has at its core 6 main pillars:

  • Teaching and Learning
  • People and Culture
  • School Community
  • Sustainability
  • Extra-curricular Opportunities
  • Social Responsibility

I look forward to sharing this exciting plan with you this term as we map our direction towards 2020.

New Parents’ Social
It was a pleasure to welcome our new families to their first social event. It was super to hear from so many parents that their children have settled in well and have been warmly welcomed into the Prep School. The evening began with a number of pianists playing beautifully and the evening was most capably overseen by our Club Captains. I would like to thank the School Governors who give freely and generously of their time to attend events at the School. I know the parents enjoyed sharing their first impressions of the School with both staff and Governors. We equally enjoyed hearing how you and your children are settling into school life.

WPSA Adult Quiz Night
The WPSA quiz will be held on Friday 7th October from 7.00pm-9pm in the Prep School Hall. Teams will consist of 8 players and you may enter a team of 8 or just enter yourself and we will match you to a table. This is a very sociable evening and a great opportunity for parents to get to know one another. Tickets are priced at £5.00 per person to include a fish and chip supper and a cash bar will also be available. The challenge this year is to beat the teachers so why not purchase a ticket and join the fun. A clarion will be sent to parents to reserve a place or table. I look forward to seeing you.

We look forward to seeing you then.

Year 5 Lessons
This week I have seen a Year 5 English class having the story of ‘The Silver Sword’ brought to life with photographs of Warsaw before and after the German invasion alongside activities to help them empathise with the children in the book. Year 5 have also been looking at ‘Kindness’ as part of their Wellbeing programme in Life Skills. They were asked to represent what kindness means to them, without using words, and they enjoyed using Mrs Rowley-Burns’ white-wall to draw their ideas.

ABA
On Thursday the Anti Bullying Ambassadors (ABAs) met for the first time to discuss what bullying actually is, what forms it might take and what to look out for day to day. They also looked at a range of different but very real scenarios and how they would handle each one. They were extremely good at deciphering which course of action to take. Finally, they started to think about ways they could use the ABA notice board to encourage and engage other pupils. We look forward to supporting them in their noble efforts as ABAs in the months to come.

“Windows into Learning” is a new initiative being launched in Year 4 this year. The aim is to give parents the opportunity to see and learn first-hand how a subject is taught in the School and engage with the children in the classroom environment, tackling tasks together set by the teacher. Mathematics is the focus of our first session on the 7th October from 2.45 and this will be followed by English, History and Geography in later terms. I hope you can join us.

Thank you to those parents who came to meet the Prep School Leadership team this week for our first “Do you have a question – come in and chat” session. It is a great opportunity to have any of those questions in your mind answered over a cup of coffee. Add the next one to your diary: Thursday 1st December at 3pm-4.30pm in the Library.

I have enjoyed watching our pupils at work and at play this week. At Prep School age, they learn and develop quickly in and out of class and it is exciting watching their abilities, skills and understanding of concepts and the world around them grow. I particularly enjoyed word play with a Year 7 class as we made up a sentence with 15 of their spelling words and planting peas, broccoli and pansies with the gardening club. I am always amazed at how absolutely fascinated they are with bugs, snails, slugs and spiders!

WPSA Quiz Night
The annual WPSA quiz night is being held next Friday, 7th October. This is a very sociable evening and a great opportunity for parents to get to know one another. Tickets are priced at £5 and full details have been sent to parents by clarion.  Please come along and support the school and WPSA.

WPSA AGM
The WPSA AGM will be held on Tuesday, 11th October, at 8pm in the School Library. The WPSA needs new members (Mums and Dads!) so please come along to the meeting. Meetings are usually held once per school term and last for an hour. The next event being organised is the Christmas Disco, a highlight for the children, and helpers will be welcome.

Achievements
Angus McDougall (Y4) successfully completed the Just Racing Triathlon.
Katie Dodge (Y6) attained the rank of 1st Kyu Intermediate at the examination of the Traditional International Shotokan Karate association.

Active Learning
This week I have enjoyed seeing Year 8 pupils in their RS lesson discussing the different aspects of Judaism and participating in active learning tasks to deepen their understanding. Also in RS lessons, Year 4 pupils have been donning costumes and getting involved in role plays to act out the story of Abraham and Sarah.

The Languages Day challenge for all Prep School pupils involved identifying ‘persistence’ in a variety of languages which linked beautifully to our Habit of Mind focus for this half term.  Next week, pupils will be given details about how to enter the competition to design a Persisting poster. The winning design will be displayed around the School.

5JF Assembly
Thank you to 5JF and Miss Machin for a thought provoking assembly on European Languages Day this week, as well as the competition which many of our pupils took part in to celebrate this occasion.  We particularly enjoyed the acting out of countries and traditions from Ada Padbury and Delphine Kenney! Well done to all involved!

Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
Our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors are continuing to work hard behind the scenes following their training and are now having weekly meetings to plan for Anti-Bullying Week after half term.

School Council and Charity Committee
Here at Wellingborough we take democracy seriously and feel it is important the pupils have a voice in representing and promoting the School Council and Charity Committee. Year 7 and 8 pupils have been presenting their pitch in front of clubs in an effort to join the Charity Committee led by Miss Ferguson and Year 6 and 8 have been doing the same for the School Council led by Miss Clark. We will hopefully be able to announce the successful candidates in next week’s newsletter.

Open Day – Saturday 15th October
Year 7 parents will have received a letter asking for pupils to help as tour guides on Open Day, thank you to all who have already signed up. Another letter has also been sent to request for Years 5 and 6 pupils to help with activities. Year 8 pupils will have the opportunity to visit the Senior School for a tour and we hope you take this opportunity to explore the next stage of your Wellingborough journey.

Pokémon Cards
Thank you to all parents for your support on the removal of Pokémon Cards from School. It has been refreshing to see the children playing with balls again in the playground and talking to each other, rather than having their heads burrowed away in the trading of cards.

The Good Gaming Guide
Many of our pupils are accessing the virtual world of gaming and enjoying endless amounts of fun and interaction with their peers.  Sometimes, as adults, this world can seem alien to us and so I wanted to share with you a link which gives a brief overview of some excellent information on security features, PEGI ratings and playing safely online click here.

Year 6 Mountfitchet Trip
On Tuesday 27th September, Year 6 pupils travelled to Essex to visit Mountfitchet Castle. Here, they stepped back in time nearly a thousand years to Norman Britain. Mixing modernity with history, they used ipads to record their findings, taking photos which they annotated with relevant information and then converted into comic strips. Pupils explored the inner and outer bailies of the castle, and within its walls, were able to examine typical features of a village, including a church, tannery, alchemist, prison, Great Hall and a peasant’s home.

Tremendous ‘Twelfth Night’
Years 5 and 6 were treated to two hour workshops with The Young Shakespeare Company. As we all know, the Bard’s plots are full of complex entanglements, cross-dressing, deaths (which aren’t), love, madness and mayhem. All of this was convincingly portrayed and explained, whilst the pupils participated with rapt enthusiasm and much hysterical laughter. Sir Toby Belch was an alcohol soaked England fan; Sir Andrew Aguecheek was a manic, cowardly schoolboy; the twins were confused (and confusing); a Welsh Lady Olivia was into yoga and her mobile phone; Count Orsino pined for love, crooning to his iPad, and the audience was enthralled. Pupils hoisted sails, rowed ships, drowned at sea, danced some truly bizarre moves, ran messages, married a couple, drew the odd dagger and generally strutted their stuff. ‘Twelfth Night’ is always a favourite comedy and straight-laced Malvolio’s punishment (seeing him parading in his yellow stockings, grinning like the Joker) had the boys and girls in stiches. There were philosophical points too: had Sir Toby taken things too far when he tried to make Malvolio believe he had gone mad? Lots to think about, lots to enjoy, it was active learning at its best.

Charity News
During the last academic year, Prep School pupils helped to raise a considerable amount of money for charity. £289.02 was raised for Jeans for Genes Day and a massive £2769.42 was raised for Cransley Hospice. This impressive amount was raised from a number of activities throughout the year such as cake sales and activity breaks. We look forward to announcing this year’s charity and thank you, in advance, for your support in our fundraising activities.

All-Comers' Tea Time Recital

Our first tea time recital this year will be on Monday 17th October at 4.30pm in the Pod. Any instrumentalists or singers who take lessons either in school or externally are welcome to perform. Pupils who would like to perform a piece they have prepared should see any member of staff in the music office, as soon as possible.

Young Voices
For the last few years, we have taken a large group of Prep School singers to the Genting Arena in Birmingham in January to take part in Young Voices, a massed choir event involving schools from all over the region. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes, at 12.10pm in the Recital Room. Pupils do not need to have any singing experience, just lots of enthusiasm.
