Headmaster’s Comments

Equestrian Event
Over half term our annual Equestrian event took place at Keysoe. Riders came from many parts of the country to take part in a day of show jumping and we are grateful to Carter Jonas for, once again, sponsoring the event. When speaking to parents of children who are heavily involved with equestrian events, their comments all had a familiar theme – the impressive organisation of the show, particularly running to time - apparently not a regular feature at other equestrian meets. We say thank you to Katharine Owen and Charlotte Woodward for all their hard work organising the event and also to all the staff, parents and pupils who helped, thus ensuring the smooth running of the day. Staff News
In September Lee Irvine, currently teaching at Thomas’ School in Clapham, will be joining us as our new Head of Sport and will be replacing Gideon Sutcliffe. Mr Irvine will be visiting us on a number of occasions over the second half of term; this will give him the opportunity to find out more about the workings of the department and a chance to meet pupils and parents.

On the first Sunday of half term, George Houghton married his fiancée Kate in Mears Ashby church. During the service the Chapel Choir sang a number of anthems; this was a lovely addition to what was a beautiful service and day.

Sport
There are not many afternoons where the School is quite as busy as it was on Wednesday, which was ‘chock-a-block’. We played three sports against five schools. Of the 11 cricket matches played, we hosted Kings Ely with three girls’ cricket teams. Thank you to all members of the Games Department for their involvement in ensuring the smooth running of the day, plus congratulations to Mr Sutcliffe for organising such an eventful afternoon.

Attain Innovation Challenge
Earlier in the week we received news from Attain Magazine that James Denton came 5th, winning a Raspberry Pi mini computer, in their Innovation Challenge Competition.  Congratulations to James and also to Adam McLean, who was selected as one of the ten finalists.

Twenty20 Cricket
The weather has improved and will hopefully remain fine for our re-arranged Twenty20 match on Friday, 19th June. The WPSA committee are looking for parents who would be willing to help supervise some of the activities or do a ‘stint’ on one of the stalls. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Please reply via the Clarion email or alternatively contact Sam Cunningham at wpsa@wellingboroughschool.org

Life Education Bus
This week our Years 4, 5 and 6 pupils have experienced the Life Education Bus as an educational tool to further their knowledge and understanding of drugs. Pupils gained an interactive experience looking at peer pressure, effects of certain drugs and risk taking behaviour.  The mobile classroom had technology to engage the children as well as a life-sized illuminated model of the human body.  Bringing our classroom learning to life was an experience we hope will remain with them in the future.
