Headmaster’s Comments

Music
This week started and is to finish with music. We started with Monday’s assembly, once again giving a number of pupils, representing all age groups, an opportunity to play in front of an appreciative audience.

It might be described as a stroke of genius when, on Tuesday, it was decided that the Teatime Recital should move from the Chapel to the Pod, probably the highest point of the School. To finish a busy, hot day listening to sweet music, in the cool of the Pod, was blissful. Musicians from all three parts of the School came together and performed a variety of music genres.

On Windband Day, a professional group of musicians take the students for workshops throughout the day, in preparation for a big finale concert, marking the end of Year 5’s Brass Project. Each year this concert develops and under the guidance of new brass teacher Mr Kershaw, this year's concert will have to go down as one of the best. Congratulations to all musicians and members of the Music department for two thoroughly enjoyable days of music.

Year 8 Leadership Week
One knows that the end of another school year begins to draw closer when the Leadership Week begins. During the week all the pupils in Year 8 have been involved in a variety of activities, which encompass many aspects of teamwork and leadership. Mrs Petrie must be thanked for the diverse range of activities that has been organised. A full report will be available next week.

Northamptonshire County Schools Challenge
This is the first year that the School have entered this challenge. This year's theme was ‘Cyber Safety’, a topic about which the Anti-Bullying Ambassadors (ABAs) feel strongly. Along with over 50 other schools within the County, the ABAs were tasked with producing a product that would assist in bullying prevention. The team successfully reached the finals which were held last night at the Castle Theatre.  Eight teams presented their ideas in front of a panel of five judges, including Police Chief Constable Adrian Lee. The School’s team, comprising of Finn Howe, Sreeya Kodavali, Henry Smith, Georgina Pitts and Ollie Bevan, can be very proud of their efforts.

Achievements
Well done to Hettie Ivory who swam 66 lengths (1 mile and 2 lengths) for SOS Swimming Club.

Year 4 Viking day
Every year, the afternoon of Year 4’s Viking Day is marked by the roar that accompanies the shield formation battle. This year there was a distinct lack of the roar, indicating that it was too hot to go ‘a raiding’! Thank you to Mrs Mason and her fellow Vikings for bring all their artefacts for the children to handle and learn about.

Year 6 Fiver Challenge
As the month of June has come to an end, so has the Fiver Challenge for Year 6. This has been a nationwide event with 700 schools taking part. Our pupils have demonstrated great initiative, entrepreneurship and enthusiasm in building up their businesses with the aim of making profit from an initial £5. All businesses have been successful and finished with a profit of varying amounts and many of the pupils have decided to give some (or all) of their proceeds to charity. In total, approximately £1100 will go to a variety of charities, including Cancer Research UK, bibic, Save the Children, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, RSPB, Thomas’s Fund, Chesterfield Hospital, the Air Ambulance and Asthma UK. Each pupil has also paid back their initial £5 and given an additional 50p to Young Enterprise in order to increase the size of the fund for next year so that more pupils around the country will be able to participate in the challenge. Well done to all the pupils for their hard work and thank you to all the parents for their support.

Geography Projects
As we start to approach the end of this academic year I am looking around at the many fantastic Geography homework projects in the classrooms. If you would like to keep those projects, please ensure that they have been collected from the Geography department before the end of the term. Unfortunately, due to constraints of storage space, I will have to assume that any projects not collected are unwanted. Any questions please email aif@wellingboroughschool.org
